We want to walk through the process of getting started with Toluu in a series of blog posts and so we thought where better to start than at the the beginning, the ‘Join’ page.

The ‘Join’ page is simply the place where you enter your information to create your Toluu account. This may sound mundane, but we have implemented a few features we are quite excited about.

We support OpenID. We decided early on, with the encouragement of Chris Messina, that we should definitely support OpenID as a form of logging in to Toluu. We have switched to using OpenID at many of the services we use everyday, like the 37 Signals products and Ma.gnolia, and we are smitten. Since Toluu aims to be a thin service that sits atop your feed reading stack, it seems natural to make the process of joining and logging in simple.

We also have a neat way for you to jumpstart the join process using info from other services you already use, like Flickr, Twitter, Technorati, Last.FM, and Upcoming. We look for the hCard microformat on your profile at these services and pull in the publicly available info to use in your Toluu account. All you have to do is input your username from these services, no password required.

We think that both OpenID and hCard importing are great examples of utilizing open standards to improve the experience of an otherwise boring and tedious process of joining a new service. We would love to hear your feedback about both of these, and ways you think we could improve them!
