The making of an older sisterYesterday

Yesterday morning we dragged Leta out of bed very early in order to make it to my doctor's appointment on time. We had not mentioned a word about what's been going on, mainly to be cautious, although she's very observant and has asked me out loud in front of strangers why my boobs are so sore. And I tell her it's because Daddy won't stop looking at them. That is not a lie, I can feel him thinking about them, staring at them, wondering why all of a sudden they've doubled in size, and when I see him walking toward me my instinct is to hide. The weight of a cotton t-shirt can be paralyzing, so you can understand that I might want to avoid the gravitational pull of two eager eyeballs.

I thought that having her in the room during my appointment would be a great way to break it to her that come June life as she knows it is going to be over, and when the doctor found the wiggly baby in my abdomen Leta shouted, "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT BABY FROM?" I was lying on the table naked from the waist down having just been through a pelvic exam, and was not prepared at all to talk to my four-year-old daughter about her father's penis. So I lied.

"Magical elves," I said.

She seemed satisfied with that answer, enough to continue with her list of questions. "HOW YOU GONNA GET THAT BABY OUT?" she said with a concern that made it sound as if she remembered the exact moment her shoulders left my womb. I assured her that such a process was something she didn't need to worry a

Hand-stitched wool bunnyYesterday

I have a serious, crippling addiction to Tiny Warbler's Etsy shop, and my most recent purchase is this dusty lilac bunny made with a cute Japanese print. It joins a vast collection that includes a bear cub, four different elephants, and a hippo. Do you have any idea how awesome it is to be pregnant and have access to Etsy? Designing the nursery this time around is going to be a completely different experience, and I won't be surprised at all if Jon is the one who ends up in the hospital.

MascotYesterday

The name of this website was too long to fit on his head, so we tried something new. And because he couldn't turn his head all the way around to see what we were doing he started to panic, like, YOU BETTER NOT BE DOING ANYTHING KINKY.

Sick daysYesterday

Yesterday we picked up Leta from school early because of a stomach ache, and she and I have spent the last 20 hours in bed connected to a steady IV drip of SpongeBob. My morning sickness is completely unpredictable and can last all day or go missing entirely, but yesterday I thought I might die. I'm never happy that she's sick, but it was certainly nice to have company.

Limited Edition 2009 Birdie Desk CalendarNovember 19

Recently I did a search for 2009 calendars on Etsy and came across hundreds of adorable desk calendars including this one from a shop called Joom. I've mentioned before that I love to have several calendars placed around the house for easy reference, and this one will probably find a permanent spot in Leta's room since the illustrations are so whimsical. When I opened the package Leta asked if this was a present for her, and I said good news and bad news. Good news? YES! Bad news? The brand is not Disney.
