- Discretionary ligaturesDecember 16 2008
-
I don’t get why anyone would use discretionary ligatures. It seems to me that it’s more of a way of saying “O HAI, I KNOW TYPOGRAPHY” than anything else. I guess if you’re setting an archaic, historical mood, it might be appropriate, but a book about typography should know better. Right?

To use the “rubber band” selection, deactivate Auto-Select Layer, choose the background layer, and drag a rectangle in your document using Command + Click. This is a very handy way to select multiple layers at once.

A few days ago I started writing about what I learned in 2008. The first draft was about typography, then I wrote a bit about music, followed by a draft about film (and video in general). With a few drafts in place, I wondered how I would design the articles. I really like how the current design iteration of Wolf’s Little Store turned out, but deep inside, there’s a certain desire to design the content, instead of dumping your blog post into a fixed template.
I believe more web designers should follow Jason Santa Maria’s example to design individual articles within a set of “rules”. Designing from scratch is always good fun, but defining a ruleset and working within that ruleset can lead to wondrous results. Some projects at work I design the website, design some examples, and at a certain I leave the website in the client’s hands. Sometimes that works out, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s always painful to see your design go awry. It’s part of the job, but it leaves you wondering whether there is even a place for art direction on the web.
That being said, please enjoy my personal review/best of 2008 in five categories: typography, music

An excerpt from Better, by Merlin Mann:
And, to be honest, I don’t have a specific agenda for what I want to do all that differently, apart from what I’m already trying to do every day:
- identify and destroy small-return bullshit;
- shut off anything that’s noisier than it is useful;
- make brutally fast decisions about what I don’t need to be doing;
- avoid anything that feels like fake sincerity (esp. where it may touch money);
- demand personal focus on making good things;
- put a handful of real people near the center of everything.
I don’t think there’s been a blog post that I’ve re-read more than this one.
