Photo Sculptures by Alejandra Laviadra
alejandralaviada.comAejandra's work explores the shifting relationship between photography and sculpture, whereby ordinary objects are stripped of their traditional function and perceived differently. each body of work is an attempt to record pieces of history that are simultaneously being erased and created , and reflect a city struggling to reconcile past and future histories.
- The Colorful Art Of MehndiNovember 22
- Mehndi is the application of Henna as a temporary form of skin decoration which is popular in South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Somalia. Mehndi decorations became fashionable in the West in the late 1990s, where they are sometimes called henna tattoos. Henna is typically applied during special occasions like weddings and festivals. It is usually drawn on the palms and feet, where the color will be darkest because the skin contains higher levels of keratin which binds temporarily to lawsone, the colorant of henna. Henna was used as a form of decoration mainly for brides. The term henna tattoo is inaccurate, because tattoos are defined as permanent surgical insertion of pigments underneath the skin, as opposed to pigments resting on the surface. Likely due to the desire for a "tattoo-black" appearance, many people have started adding the synthetic dye PPD to henna to give it a black color. PPD is extremely harmful to the skin and can cause severe allergic reactions resulting in permanent injury or even, in the worst case, death.
- Classic Colors: Abstract ExpressionismNovember 21
-
Abstract Expressionism was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and also the one that put New York City at the center of the art world.
Technically, an important predecessor is surrealism, with its emphasis on spontaneous, automatic or subconscious creation. Jackson Pollock's dripping paint onto a canvas laid on the floor is a technique that has its roots in the work of Max Ernst. Another important early manifestation of what came to be abstract expressionism is the work of American Northwest artist Mark Tobey, especially his "white writing" canvases, which, though generally not large in scale, anticipate the "all over" look of Pollock's drip paintings.

- Letting Nature Paint Its Own ColorsNovember 20
-
“The pen moves across the earth: it no longer knows what will happen, and the hand that holds it has disappeared.” - Paul Auster
The beauty that comes from chance and chaos captured by two artist whose work is hardly their own, but more of an account of witnessing nature. If you've ever wondered what the wind would paint if it could hold a brush, or if you like the aesthetics of a bug's path crisscrossing the earth, you might share a similar mindset as these two artists and enjoy the colorful work that comes out of their artistic explorations.
Tree Drawings by Tim Knowles
timknowles.co.ukThe work attempts to make visible the invisible, be it the movement of the wind traced out onto paper by a pen suspended from a buoyant helium balloon, the path drawn by the moons reflection on undulating water or the forces at work within a car as it drives over the Alps. As with the work of Roman Signer, an action, movement, or event produces the art work.
- Color Trends: GreyNovember 19
-
Our good color loving friends over at Etsy are all about gray at the moment and sent along this post to share. Along with their grey fashion trends we'll take a look at some website designs, and palette inspiration from the CL library.
Earl Grey. Grey Gardens. Gray's Anatomy. Besides these many varied instances, grey (or gray, depending how you spell it) is quite the trend as of late. From clothing to accessories, grey captivates the imaginations of fashionistas the world over. Maybe it's because it's a midway point between black and white, or maybe just because of its neutral qualities — grey just seems to work with everything (and doesn't have to be thought of as gloomy to get the job done). Here's to our new favorite color!
