What 4 Months of Blogging Has Taught MeMay 8

donkey-ass

Another month already! I feel like an ass — the one up top, with the load of someone else’s crap on his back. If that isn’t foreshadowing, I don’t know what is. Before I break it down, check out March’s wrap-up.

Like previous wrap-ups, this is a stream of consciousness on the few topics that have occupied my mind while engaged in the world of blogging this last month, and the lessons I’ve learned.

Blog First for You, then Blog for Them…

It’s all about mentality.

The second I shift from blogging to voice my thoughts, opinions and expertise to blogging because the people demand it, I feel as if a concrete sack has been pinned to my back and I’m being made to scale the mountain. I’m missing the view, the sweat pouring down my face is burning my eyes, so I walk blind.

When I speak for me, my words resonate in other people and a harmonic understanding is created. When I speak for others, everyone loses footing and nothing is heard.

Consistency is the Key, but…I Misplaced the Lock

Consistency is the answer. Quality is good, but not a necessity. Quantity can help, but again, it isn’t necessary.

Feed Reader? Little Orange Button? No Fear, It’s RSS Awareness DayMay 1

RSS Awareness Day

Really Simple Syndication

Subscribing to the RSS feed of a given website/blog will allow you to automatically receive every new post as soon as it is published, which is very convenient; you don’t even have to visit the website ever again…or at least for weeks at a time. It’s more like a speed reading technique rather than a substitute for swinging by. Us publishers still like it when you visit from time to time, it gives us a chance to show off our new shoes and fancy pants.

RSSDay.org

The folks over at Daily Blog Tips have put together a site dedicated to teaching those who haven’t joined the loop yet what it is all about. Go visit RSSDay.org.

Becoming BloghardyApril 29

livestrong

bloghardy [blog-hahr-dee] - adjective. a weblog capable of enduring fatigue, hardship, exposure, etc.; sturdy; daring; courageous.

A blog is nothing but the writers, designers and contributors it houses, so it is in your best interest to make sure you, as a member of the household, become as bloghardy as you can be.

Enduring…

Fatigue. Creating content is easy. It is already all around you, ready for the picking. The hard part is dressing it up, cleaning it, polishing it and making sure it safely navigates its way in the world. All of this is time consuming, especially since the majority of bloggers do it in their off time.

“Blogging is often more of a lifestyle choice than a hobby or a business model, and that choice often has its cost.” - Mark Seall (via Problogger)

We all need recognition and an occasional kick in the ass. Here are a few things that work: writing series posts, aw

Leave a Video Comment? Or, FU Jay?April 25

Seesmic LogoAre you kept up at night by the lack of your mug being plastered across the blogosphere? Rest easy, my friends, the bug-eyed raccoon has arrived.

TechCrunch recently announced that they will be using the new Seesmic WordPress plugin to incorporate video comments across their network.

This isn’t the first company to offer such a service — Viddler has been doing it for a while.

I think it’s a fun idea, despite my belief that it will eventually crash-and-burn (or at least never make it above 2,000 feet):

Too Much Time

You can’t skim video. That pretty much says it all. It will take double or triple the amount of time to watch a series of video

Design Better. Write Better.April 24

Naomi wants to play a game. I’m in. Here’s how it starts:

“So what do you actually do for a living?”

Design better. Write better.Well, in any other medium, I’d pull out my pompous sweater and begin ranting about how I’m a new breed of man and “what I do” encompasses something so large, not even I can put words around it. But, this blog is about two things — Designing better and writing better — and that, is where I’ll draw the line (for now). The following is what I do, here, at S&W.

What’s your game? What do you do?

I design — mostly ad banners, blog headers and logos. Occasionally, full-blown website design has been known to spout from my fingers. Until time permits, that will remain an anomaly — reserved for grand projects, projects that change lives, and…my own shit — I’m fastidiously self-serving.

I write — specializing in creating and optimizing website copy, feature articles, newsletters, email marketing campaigns, and SEO copy.

Why do you do it? Do you love it, or do you just have one of thos
