I've been seeing some crazy rumours flying around the web since last night (particularly on Twitter) about Make Use Of so this blog post is to put down the whole truth and put those stupid rumours to bed once and for all.
Yesterday, while monitoring Twitter, I began noticing a couple of people on my Twitter stream saying that the Make Use Of domain was "parked". For anyone not familar with the terminology, this is basically when the whole site goes offline and the domain is basically redirected to some "static page" filled with paid links. It took a while for me to see the parked domain on my screen but eventually Make Use Of went offline for me and I immediately lost my appetite for dinner.
Needless to say, I immediately contacted Aibek (the editor-in-chief) and he started to find out what had happened. The problem was quickly traced to our GoDaddy account and we found out that it had been hacked by someone. The hacker had transferred ownership of the makeuseof.com domain from the GoDaddy account to another web registrar company called NameCheap (the reseller for ENOM). Looking at the emails now we can say t

- Back Up Files To Email With Just One ClickApril 27
-
I have had the email purists gang up on me for this in the past but I constantly use my Gmail account for backing up my digital life. This has led to the online lynch mobs chanting “an email account is not for backing up important documents!” and they are right to a certain extent. I wouldn’t dream of putting into my Gmail account things like my passport or my birth certificate. I’m not stupid! But if I find things on the internet like pictures, MP3’s, video clips, and other such paraphernalia then I would rather store it in my large 6.6GB + Gmail account then have it lying around in my computer. Plus day to day things such as letters, documents, contracts, e-books and other pieces of paper that can be scanned and emailed to myself can also live in Gmail and can be accessed wherever I have access to a computer.
This is where the freeware software program Backup To EMail becomes extremely invaluable. I have been using it every day for months and it makes backing up files to email effortless and a cinch.
Backup To Email allows you to right-click on any file in your computer and send it to an email account that gives you POP / SMTP access. The program integrates itself into your Windows Explorer right-click menu so it really is a case of right-click and se
- How to Monitor Websites that don’t have RSS FeedsApril 25
-
Not so long ago I got an email from one of the readers asking if there is a way to be notified about site updates when the site doesn’t offer RSS feeds. And since there are plenty of popular sites that don’t provide any feeds I thought it may be a good idea to write about it. So if you’re interested here are some free tools that can do the job.
Monitor Webpages for Changes
If you’re a Firefox user then you can try Update Scanner. It’s an extension that lets you monitor webpages for changes. You have an option to choose how often the website should be checked for changes, and whether it should ignore the minor ones, such as the changes to numbers.

When the page changes it shows a notification alert. If you monitor multiple webpages then you can get a quick overview of pages using the arrow button located at the right bottom corner of the screen. Web pages that have been updated will be shown in bold with an arrow next to them.

If you don’t use Firefox then you can try ChangeNotes or ChangeDetection. Both of these webs
- 7 Windows Explorer Addons for Power UsersApril 19
-
Windows Explorer probably lacks a few features that some people desperately require. It might be quite OK to use for the usual purposes, but when it comes to power tasks, it fails.
Here are seven carefully hand-picked utilities that enhance the default Windows Explorer functions and will leave you thinking “Why doesn’t Explorer have these by default?”
1. Folder Size
Windows Explorer, by default, doesn’t show the size of the folder when you opt for the ‘Details’ view. This is one of the little things that users will find lacking in Windows Explorer.

Well, this is when Folder Size comes in as a handy tool that adds the ‘Folder Size’ column to Windows Explorer Details View. Here’s the details column after installing Folder Size:

2. QT Tab Bar
QT Tab Bar brings tabbed navigation to Windows Explorer. If you frequently deal with a large number of scattered files, you should definitely consider using this application.
