Security Now 163 ErrorSeptember 26

Something went wrong when we posted Security Now 163 today - the show was cut in half. I've pulled it down for now and I'll repost it first thing tomorrow morning. Please accept my apologies.

UPDATE: It's been fixed. Download away!

The Website Is DownSeptember 21

On Friday evening we had a catastrophic failure of the web server that hosts TWiT Live, the TWiT Army Canteen, Leoville.com, and this site. The RAID 5 controller died, and when it did it marked all the disks unusable. Support personnel at Softlayer, our hosting company, weren't able to recover the disks, so they did the only thing they could do: replaced the controller and reinstalled the operating system. We're in the process of restoring all the sites.

TWiT.tv

Gordon Heydon, who maintains twit.tv for us has restored the site. He backed up the database last on September 6, so we'll have to recreate the subsequent entries by hand from feeds. That will take a day or so. No data has been lost. The podcasts and their RSS feeds are hosted elsewhere so they're not affected.

TWiT Live

We're back up and running thanks to Mape who rushed us a copy of his re-design. Thanks, Mape!

TWiT Forums

The database was backed up on September 4, but there's no backup of the software, so that's going to take some time. I'll reinstall as soon as I can.

The posts and comments were fully backed up through Friday. I'm looking for a backup of the software and

TWiT LiveMay 10

Ever since we started this thing three years ago listeners have been asking us when we'd do some video shows. The problem has always been that there's not much to see. I'm in Petaluma and the TWiTs are spread all over the world. We did a few live TWiTs on video but they were less than satisfactory. The audio was terrible, it was difficult to get everyone together, and it wasn't very compelling visually.

Fast forward to 2007. I started streaming video of my side of the radio show, and people seemed to like it. When the first floor of the TWiT Cottage became available in March I rented it and we've been equipping it as an Internet studio ever since. We had three Canon XL-2 cameras already from the previous attempt, I've added LED lights from Lite Panels and Newtek's Tricaster Studio for switching and voila, instant studio.

We're still getting up to speed technically (we're just using one camera until I get the Tricaster working) but you can watch now. I'll stream whatever's going on (usually podcast and radio show production with various intermezzos) from 11a-4p Pacific (2-7p Eastern, 6-11p UTC) every day but Monday and Friday. Eventually we'll do specials on Friday, too. The point of doing this live is to add interactivity and we'll be integrating Skype calls and chat questions as we get the technical kinks worked out. I Go To The Land Down UnderMarch 30

E516BAC6-63A8-49F7-9485-219BAB5F5AED.jpgI'm leaving tonight for Australia on the Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop Adventure 2008: Tasmania!

My good friend Mikkel Aaland, author of O'Reilly's Lightroom Adventure is leading another photo expedition; this time it's to Tasmania with a bunch of the world's top photographers for the next edition of his book and he invited me to come. I couldn't resist even though I'm no photo pro. (They're billing me as a "special media guest.")

I do apologize for missing my friends on the mainland - the itinerary is limited to Tassie: a week in Hobart and a week in the wild. Our Qantas flight does stopover for seven hours in Sydney, so thanks to Aussie Mike, we'll do an impromptu meetup at the Starbucks at Terminal 3, Sydney Airport, 11a-1p on Tuesday. (It's a 12-hour flight and we cross the International Date Line so even though I'm leaving Sunday night I won't arrive in Sydney until Tuesday morning!) If there are any fans in Hoba

New Album ArtFebruary 13

You might have noticed the new album art here. Thanks to the great Lori Lebeau-Walsh for those. Lori did the FLOSS Weekly, Jumping Monkeys, and Radio Leo album art some time ago and she volunteered to redo all the rest to give it a more consistent look.

The host portraits that the album art is based on are by the amazing Nitrozac from The Joy of Tech. She'll do one for you, too, by the way, for a very reasonable cost.

Thanks to Lori and Nitrozac for their great work!
