- T.O. Events for December 5th-11thToday
-
It's December, which means that almost every food and drink event for the next few weeks will have a Christmas or holiday theme of some sort. One of our favourites is Christmas Around The World, presented in the Rotunda at City Hall by The Community Folk Art Council this weekend. People from around the world will be on hand with displays representing the Christmas traditions of their country - including plenty of food, of course.
(We like to call it, "Cookies Around The World", since every country seems to include cookies in their holiday traditions.)
There's plenty more happening as well, so check out full listings for the next week below, and as always, our Events page has more information on these and many other upcoming events in Toronto and area.

Here's some food for thought for today...- Burger King draws criticism for their "Burger Virgins" campaign in which they have people from different countries (appearing in their national costume for some reason) try burgers for the first time.
- The counts for the melamine scare in China are higher than previously thought, with almost 300,000 children made sick after consuming tainted formula.
- "...isn't the ludicrous, out-of-date superstition that MSG is as deadly as Satan's fingernail raspings robbing us of a key ingredient?" Tim Hayward of the Guardian defends his favourite food additive.
- Could you live on nothing but organic food for three years?
- Australia and the EU sign a deal to

This week at NOW, Steven Davey celebrates the ladies with reviews of both Anne Yarymowich's Frank at the AGO and Donna Dooher's Mildred's Temple Kitchen (note - due to a production issue, the review of Temple is not in the print edition of the paper). Both chefs have plenty of compliments for each other (Yarymowich once worked for Dooher) and Davey has compliments - and also some critique - of each place, although his review doesn't cover dessert at Frank, which was, during my visit, possibly the best part of the meal. Graham Duncan sips some whisky from Alberta.Over at Eye, Alan A. Verson and Sean Kelly Keenan have an odd experience at Gilead Cafe when a server demonstrates some inappropriate personal hygiene choices before touching the food. They enjoy the food anyway.
Barb Holland has a "book buffet" this week at Metro with a selection of great reads (or gifts) for foodies. Also - tips on having
- Green Barn Market OpensYesterday
-

It's an early Saturday morning in November and it feels like I'm in an urban village, albeit one that is covered, jam-packed and well-heeled. It's the launch of the Green Barn Market at the Artscape Wychwood Barns, a new community centre uniting environmental, cultural and arts space and affordable housing for artists. Under the Covered Barn, one of 4 converted TTC streetcar barns onsite, excited local residents are chatting over stone ground, fair trade hot chocolate while shopping from over forty year-round market stalls.
A selection of teas, fruit preserves, smoked fish, even candles and wool, help shoppers beat the chill of late Fall. There's birch syrup and dried mushrooms from Forbe's Wild Foods and a selection of meat from Stoddart Farm and Naturally Raised Beef. For those lucky enough to snag a seat at one of the tiny, coveted tables, there's food hot off the grill like polenta cakes with local leeks, mushrooms and cheese from Chez Vous and sweet potato, corn and sage empanadas from Surkls. Others have gone straight for the Paradiso sheep milk's cheese at Monteforte Dairy, the addictive cinnamon buns and potato-rosemary bread from Alli's Bread, or the seasonal,

Here's some food for thought for today...- If you didn't can your own tomato sauce this summer, odds are the stuff you're buying comes from California.
- Pannetone is the new fruitcake, especially when it comes to regifting. Serious Eats follows up - check the comments in both posts - apparently someone out there does like the stuff.
- More food trends for 2009, this time from Gastrodamus. Soup is the new stew!
- And, oh, let's keep going with the lists, hey - weird foods, lots of them. But don't eat ortolans; that's just mean and creepy.
- Not mean and creepy, unless you believe in Santa or are a vegetarian activist, is reindeer meat.
