- Barack Obama Uses a ZuneDecember 3
-
After all of the misinformation and dirty lies spread about Obama over the course of the presidential campaign, this is the most shocking I've heard about him: He uses a Zune. This can't be possible. Why? Because, as has been widely reported, Obama, many of his staffers and Joe Biden use a Mac. And well, Zunes don't work on Macs and ... my mind is blown.
So, he's either more personally tech savvy than we thought and uses Boot Camp or Parallels to sync up his Zune for working out—which is a lot of effort just to do that, really—showing just how committed he is to reaching across the aisle in all kinds of ways, or he secretly has a PC too. Or.. what if all that Mac stuff was just a lie to attract the young, Twittering college crowd? What if his whole campaign was a lie? Is the world even real? Hold me. [City Paper]
- You Might Have a Hard Time Finding an iPod for ChristmasDecember 3
-
You expect Wiis to be rarer than cancer-survivor unicorns around Christmas, not iPods. But analyst Shaw Wu says that iPod shortages are going all around, from the iTouch to the shuffle, and at multiple retailers. The first sign of retail shortage started with the iPod touch at Amazon on Black Friday, where lead times expanded from 11 days to 3-5 weeks on both models. AI notes that the available models now come from affiliates and "are not a reflection of its own inventories." Wu's latest checks show that the nano and shuffle are getting scarce too, with shortages at retailers like Best Buy, Target and Walmart.
Why the crazy demand that's outstripping supply, especially since we're at kind of a saturation point? Well, because iPods are relatively cheap gifts (compared to like an Xbox 360 or PS3), and Wu says that there's a "strong consumer understanding of the value it provides." Or in English, there aren't many people who would be unhappy to get an iPod. But, you know, if you can't find an iPod, I'm guessing there won't be a shortage on Zunes. [

The Financiapocalypse can't stop Christmas, but it can sure as hell suck some of the joy out of it. When you're configuring a laptop online, you get a ton of options unless it's a Mac (ooooo burn). Anyway, the popular wisdom is that juicing the processor is always the best way to allocate your dollars to boost performance, since more megahertz is more betterer, right? Wrong. -
One of those rumors that won't ever die—the Zune phone—is now being touted by a reputable, legitimate news organization, CNBC. Jim Goldman (the guy that interviews Steve Jobs on CNBC after every Apple event) says that according a "good source," Microsoft is "ready to give a major facelift to the company's Zune music player that could mean its evolution into a new smart phone from the company." The project is codenamed Pink and "will combine the company's Zune and technology from Microsoft's purchase of Danger Inc." Update: If this rings a bell, it's because others have, in the past, referred to Microsoft's mysterious consumer smartphone initiative as "Pink" or "Purple and Pink"This has actually been the consistent beat on the drum for at least seven months, with Microsoft itself dropping hints that it wanted to combine Danger's consumer-friendly OS expertise with the Zune. You know what? It actually makes us pretty excited. A ZunePhone made by Danger might be the Microsoft smartphone we've been really waiting for. [C
