The BrightKite That I Hope To See…November 12 2008

blog In my post “Using Social Media to Get Out of Your House”, I recommended some great social media tools and services that I use to get out of my house. However, one particular service I told you that I’d save for another post. Why? Because Brightkite has so much potential, that I’d only just begun to see when they released their Brightkite app for the iPhone. It’s phenomenal and well worth having it’s own post.

Chris Brogan has written a remarkable post titled “If I Owned Brightkite” on the potential of Brightkite and I just wanted to share it with you all. Do you agree with Chris’ thoughts on Brightkite?

I’m watching you, BrightKite. I’m thinking long and hard about how this application can do more for businesses, for nonprofits, for humans in need of guidance through a secret world. I’m seeing linkages to several applications, to several other data stores in need of shaping.

When Real Life Interrupts: Maintaining Separate Images & PersonasNovember 10 2008

blog I am officially 21. My birthday was this past Friday and I want to take the time to thank you all for the well wishes and gifts. I’ve gotten a ton of both.

For my birthday I partied hard with my friends Friday and Saturday night. However, I encountered a dilemma on Sunday when I decided to upload my birthday pictures and I’d like to hear your thoughts on what you’d do in such a situation.

Some of us have completely separate lives on the web. I for one use an online alias for various reasons. I’m starting to get to the point where it’s become quite a task to keep up these two personas. However, they really aren’t all that different. Corvida talks a lot about technology and my real name (which I will not reveal yet) is a smart mouth who enjoys getting down and dirty with her friends. Shocking, I know. Otherwise there isn’t much of a difference between what I portray online versus online.

Regardless, the smart mouth is who celebrated her birthday. Not Corvida. So my pictures are not necessarily vulgar, but I think some of my online friends would be shocked to see this side of me. It made me think twice about the persona that I have online versus what my friends physically near me get to see.

Only a handful of my online friends knew what I’d planned for m

Using Social Media to Get Out of Your HouseNovember 4 2008

blog If you’ve been wondering why I’ve been M.I.A. lately, you can thank Twitter for it. I love blogging. I love my online life and I appreciate the audience I have here on SheGeeks. However, sometimes real life interrupts. You sit at your computer all day, every day and then one day, you want to get up and go. Go somewhere, any where! You just want to get out of your house and interact with people right before your eyes. Unfortunately, you just can’t get this experience online.

However, you may encounter another problem when you have that itch to get up and go. You have no clue where to go. You don’t know what’s going on in your area and your friends may or may not be up for going out with you. Either way, you still want to get out of the house. What do you do? Well, you turn to the web and all these social media tools. Isn’t that what they’re here for?

The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community ManagerOctober 16 2008

blog In the past month you may have spotted me engaging in conversation and numerous activities on Friendfeed and Facebook, more specifically in the RWW Groups on these services. The purpose was to attempt to engage our audience as much as possible and of course bring some traffic back to ReadWriteWeb. However in doing all of this I learned something about myself and about being a community manager. I think it’s very important to have this trait and hone to the best of your ability if you’re looking to be a community manager. Most people talk about listening to the community. Well, that’s complete important and part of the job. However, I think the most important lesson to learn is to be selfless.

Twitter Redesign Finally Goes LiveSeptember 19 2008

Back in July I was one of the first to break the news about a Twitter redesign that accidentally went live well before its time. FYI: TechCrunch copied and pasted practically my entire post about this. The redesign was available for all of about 3 minutes with only a handful of people able to grab a screenshot or two. Here’s a snapshot of what the redesign was like when it leaked:

Today, the site has went live with this redesign with only minor changes here and there. The tabs are still located on the side and your latest tweet is still located directly beneath the “What are you doing?” box. Followers, followings, and updates are located in the top right corner along with your avatar. The device updates options are now located beneath your friends. The last change is probably due to the fact that not many people are able to use device updates now that Twitter has restricted text messaging usage.

Prototype-ish

The site redesigns aren’t final as Twitter has noted that there will more changes and features in the feature. Let
