- Judge Judy Vs. The YouTube Divorce Lady, Tricia Walsh-Smith [WWJJD]Yesterday

On Monday, a judge granted a divorce to Philip Smith from Tricia Walsh-Smith, on the grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. Tricia made a name for herself in April when she began posting googly-eyed rants about her divorce on YouTube, complaining that her husband was evicting her from her Park Avenue apartment, and going on about what a terrible person he is. It seemed to have hurt her case in divorce court, as the judge upheld her prenup. So we decided to send her to a different court: That of Judge Judith Sheindlin.

We've blogged about AshleyMadison.com before, but last night some of us saw a commercial for the site that was thoroughly revolting. A man slips from his place in bed next to a snoring (equally) chubby woman while a voiceover says,"Most of us can recover from a one-night stand with the wrong woman… But not when it's every night, for the rest of our lives." Cut to a picture showing that the woman is the man's wife. Yes, AshleyMadison.com caters to married men and women looking to have affairs with other marrieds. (A billboard for the site, which read "Life is short. Have an affair" was removed from New York's Times Square today, due to complaints.) A liberating service for consenting adults? A couple hours ago I sort of subconsciously baited the perpetrators of something I've found increasingly irritating about this site: sometimes people make the place feel unsafe not only for jokes but for actual true things, such as "sex without condoms feels better."But the post also conveys something that's started to annoy me about myself: it's harder and harder to reconcile those Id-level truths with broader, more sober ones, such as, for starters "Easy for me to say being as I am white."* Of the 7,196 women who contracted AIDS from sex in the United States in 2006, the last year reported (and not incidentally, the last year I left my house on any sort of normal basis) only 17% of them were white. That is 1,221 white women.
