This is a guide that helps to explain Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which is commonly referred to as ‘Porting’. It addresses common questions, procedures to port numbers and what to do when you have trouble with porting.

 

What is it?

Porting is an industry process that allows customers to retain their mobile number when they want to switch over to a new service provider.

For instance, I am currently with another service provider and wish to port across   my number to 3!

 

This requires all carriers in Australia to be advised that the number is being ported so that you can receive calls from people on other networks.

 

By the way, Australia has the best porting process in the world. It’s faster to port a number in Australia and a less complex process.

 

All service providers must follow certain rules developed by the industry and these are monitored and enforced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

 

Common questions

 

Do I need to notify my current service provider that I am porting out my number?

No, your new service provider will make all the arrangements to port your number. Once your number has been ported to your new service provider, the previous service provider will be automatically notified and they may terminate your account and send you a bill
