Lightroom Tip - Use Shift to Align Graduated FilterNovember 21
The Graduated Filter tool in Lightroom is great but it can be tricky to keep aligned with the edge of the image.

There is a simple trick here. Just hold down the Shift key as you pull out the mask.

Now you will have a perfectly aligned filter. It works on any of the four sides of the image.

Hope this helps.

New Techniques Article - Sharpening in LightroomNovember 12
A new user to Lightroom will probably notice that images look soft and unsharpened when viewed at anything other than full-size.

The reason being that Lightroom only shows the effect of sharpening when viewed full size. This is in contrast with a program such as Photoshop which will provide an approximation of the sharpened image. I would guess the Lightroom designers decided not to provide a compromised sharpening view.

To see the effects of sharpening on your image you have to export outside of Lightroom and then view in your final application or print.

Lightroom Tip - Compare Mode Indicator DiamondsNovember 3
If you are using Lightrooms' Survey mode (key N), to narrow down your images, you will probably want to use Compare Mode (C Key) to make a final selection.

Lightroom Compare Mode

I have always found Compare Mode hard to use as I cannot easily determine which image is the Candidate and which is the currently selected image.

Once you have the image candidates narrowed down press the C key to enter compare mode. You will now have two images. One labelled Select and one labelled Candidate. See below.

The Filmstrip will have highlighted all the images you have been surveying. It is not easy to see which image is the candidate and which is the selected image.

Now look at the film strip and you will notice that there is a small diamond in the top right-hand corner of both the candidate and the selected image. The candidate diamond is white, whilst the selected image has a black diamond.

Lightroom Tip - Sort Photos by Edit TimeOctober 25
In the Library Module there is a very useful sort option called Edit Time.
Lightroom edit count sort mode

Sorting the grid view by Edit Time will display the thumbnails with the most recent ones at the beginning (top) of the grid.

This is an easy way to select all of the photos that have had any form of editing applied. Note that adding keywords counts as editing.

Sorting by Edit Count is not so useful as it seems to order the images according to how often an edit has been performed on the image.
