Lightroom Tip - Increase import thumbnail sizeDecember 30 2008

When importing images from a card don't forget that you can resize the thumbnails using the preview slider at the bottom right of import dialogue box.

It is possible to make the previews really big so that you can choose not to import the photo if it is not worth keeping. The slider will let you have two or three images per row although the quality of the thumbnails will suffer if you make them too big.

It can be a real time saver to not import images that you know that you are going to trash later on!

Lightroom Tips - Sync with Opposite PanelDecember 20 2008

Lightroom 2 has a new way of showing and hiding the side panels. Perviously you could show and hide each panel as well as auto hiding an individual panel. You do this by holding your mouse cursor over one of the small outward facing triangles at the edge of the side panels and right click.

Now there is a new choice, Sync with Opposite Panel, which when selected will show or hide both left and right panels at the same time. This works for the Top and Bottom panels as well. Note you can set a different option for each Lightroom Module.

This is similar to pressing the TAB key which will also show and hide the side panels, but is much easier to use. I now have the Sync with Opposite Panel option selected all the time.

Lightroom Tip - Use Navigator to Switch ViewsDecember 13 2008

In the Library Module you can quicky switch the main viewing area between views by clicking on any of the scale icons at the top of the Navigator panel.

Repeatedly clicking will allow you to cycle between the three Library Module views of Grid, your magnified view and the Fit view. The unexpected - and useful - view change here is the grid view. Note that you only get the Grid view this way if you are working in the Library Module.

This is a quick and convenient when you are using the Navigator to explore the image.

Lightroom Tip - Use Shift to Align Graduated FilterNovember 21 2008

The Graduated Filter tool in Lightroom is great but it can be tricky to keep aligned with the edge of the image.

There is a simple trick here. Just hold down the Shift key as you pull out the mask.

Now you will have a perfectly aligned filter. It works on any of the four sides of the image.
