The story says it all:
A background check system used by many Texas schools to spot visitors who are sex offenders is being challenged by two parents who say the process violates their privacy and other rights. Yvonne and Larry Meadows are suing the Lake Travis school district over a computer system that checks visitors against a sex offender database by scanning their driver’s license. Visitors who don’t consent can be turned away.
The federal lawsuit filed in November is believed to be among the first legal challenges to the policy in Texas. Houston-based Raptor Systems, which performs background checks for Lake Travis and 5,000 other schools nationwide, said it was unaware of similar lawsuits.
The Meadowses say the computerized checks violate their constitutional rights, including freedom to associate with their children at school and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure. Neither are listed in the national sex offender database.
Yvonne Meadows said she objected to Bee Cave Elementary School scanning her license because she was concerned about identify theft and a private company collecting her personal information. (…read more, chron.com)

Carol Queen just sent me this story in the Guardian UK Porn bill for couple who can’t download, which I’d been looking at with a furrowed brow for the past day or so trying to put all the pieces together. And it clicked. You’ll see in the URL string that it says “porn bill mistake” but I think there’s likely something much more malfeasant than a mistake behind the P-2-P (peer to peer file sharing) porn curtain.
Basically, people in Europe are getting letters — official “pre-settlement” letters — offering not to prosecute them for illegally snagging a porn film. The letters from a legal firm called Davenport Lyons are asking for around $772 (£503) in exchange for alleged copyright infringement and to avoid court action for Lyons’ claim that those receiving the letter have allegedly downloaded a porn film. Not just any porn film — particularly a Nazi gay male hardcore flick.

Now, this article, The dizzying diversity of human sexual strategies and this test at New Scientist to rate your ’sociosexuality’ doesn’t come without a caveat — though it does come to me via Praemedia. The caveat is that to me, at least, it seems pretty gender skewed. And while the blogger at Mind Hacks acknowledges the dated ‘men spread their seed’ notion permeating the New Scientist piece, it still makes it tough to take it too terribly seriously. There is no queer here, nor a place in the reasearch for girls like me who are happily (and surgically) childfree by choice. Even still, it’s an entertaining sex nerd read.
