Category: Project of the MonthCan it really be 2009 already? Our first Project of the Month winner for the year is the WYSIWYG JavaScript open source editor, TinyMCE.
If the name isn’t familiar, the interface surely is. Wordpress has been shipping TinyMCE as its editor of choice since the release of Wordpress 2.0, and it’s also the default editor for the popular content management system, Joomla.
Project leads Johan “Spocke” Sˆrlin and Joakim Lindkvist say they’re really proud of TinyMCE because of its clean, tight code and because it holds its own against similar (and costly) commercial solutions.
Have a look at this month’s Project of the Month page to read all about TinyMCE and its goals for the future.

Category: GeneralI’ve waited too long to write this, but Chris Jones’s Trip Report reminded me, so here I am with my own report.
Back in August, Er Galvao invited us, i.e., SourceForge, to speak at PHP Brasil ‘08. And as soon as I got wind of the opportunity, I jumped on it - quickly enough to beat luapffuh to it.
The topic emerged as “PHP at SourceForge: Powering the World’s #1 Open-Source Website” and I set off putting together the presentation (keynote, ppt, pdf). A couple months later I set out for Brazil - excited but not really knowing what to expect.Chris’s report gives a great summary of the conference, so I’ll just add a few of my own notes and experiences …
I agree UNIFIEO was a great venue. I appreciat

Category: Project of the MonthWhat’s better than totally legal peer-to-peer file sharing? Not much, right? This month’s Project of the Month, Shareaza, is a cool way to way to get your hands on more than 15 million songs and videos.
Shareaza’s developers say there’s lots of things that make this project unique. “It is probably the only app that supports completely all features of the G2 network, it allows advanced control of downloads and searches and all aspects of the application, it can search by various hashes: sha1, tiger, ed2k, md5, btih (this also allows for revival of dead torrents by search torrent sources using btih over G2 and also allow to download from other networks the same file).”
There’s more, too, and you can read all about it right here.

Things seem particularly contentious this election year, and everyone can only really agree on one thing: there’s an awful lot at stake. Are you nervous? We are too. To settle the debate, we polled over 250 random SourceForge.net and Slashdot users on a wide range of political issues…because, after all, you guys are not known for mincing your words. We figured that if anyone can get to the bottom of this, you can.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s no need to wait until next week because the results are in! The open source community has spoken.
Our polls showed Obama with an almost 2:1 edge over McCain in the US, but internationally the ratio was a staggering 37:1.
Q: Who is your political candidate of choice?
US:
56% Obama
30% McCain
14% IndependentInternational:
93% Obama
5% McCain
2% IndependentBut there’s more.
When those of you in the US were asked, “What’s the most important thing that should be done by the U.S. government in the next four years”, the most common response was “it’s

Hey! Wanted to let you all know that Daniel Hinojosa, our support manager, will be talking about a day in the life of your typical open source support ninja at the Ontario Linux Fest in Toronto on Saturday, October 26th. Want to learn the hidden secrets that the pros know and you don’t? If you’re going to be in town, you should stop by. I’ll also be there providing moral support and paying for everybody’s beer. There will be a preview presentation at the seventh annual FSOSS conference at Seneca@York on the 24th too, because the only thing better than seeing Daniel talk about SourceForge is seeing Daniel talk about SourceForge twice. Hope to see you there!
