Pre-Shampoo or Pre-Poo is just a 'treatment' that you do prior to shampooing your hair. It can be something you whipped up in your own kithcen or a product specifically made for pre-pooing. It can be as simple as coconut oil or EVOO or as complex as you can dream up. But basically the purpose is to condition and treat your hair prior to shampoo as many shampoos contain harsh detergents. The length of your pre-poo treatment can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as a full day, it depends on your availability. DIY hair has it's advantages as you can see.
Homemade Light Protein Pre Poo
Heaping scoop of Mayo
Good squeeze of honey
1 egg
& whatever else your heart desires... beer, your favorite conditioner, coconut oil, or nothing!
AHS' Favorite Overnight Pre-Poo
coconut oil
small amount of EVOO
apply from the ends up, cover with a plastic cap, followed by a scarf - leave on overnight
Fruity Mix (stronger protein)
some plain yogurt

Why is that I have never been offered these?!? All the times I have sat under the dryer hoping my ears would still be there when I got out? Then I read about people using ear protectors and I think... what's that? Finally I see one and I said out loud (to myself) why didn't I think of that?!? Plus, they have ear protectors for when you have a chemical service or dye job done. Available at Sallys Beauty Supply Stores.

As I sit here under my favorite Gold n Hot Soft Bonnet dryer drying my DIY rollerset I can't help but think 'is it really worth all the trouble?' It's not exactly a time issue, I headed off to the shower at exactly 4:57 washed, conditioned, and roller set my hair. It's now 5:52, so everything took a little under an hour but still the headache of actually putting the rollers in can be not only frustrating but pointless if you don't get them right. Then the amount of time you have to spend under the dryer, then possibly blowing (or flatironing) your roots straight or doing the saran wrap method adds another 30 minutes to an hour to the whole process. I'm starting to rethink the benefits of DIY rollersetting and wonder if the pros really outweight the cons.

How many of you guys blow dry your hair at least once a week? Sometimes I'm guilty of that, other times I'm not but whenever I do blow dry my hair I wait until my hair is 50-75% dry then I proceed to blow dry. Instead of blasting my hair while it's completely wet I give it sometime to air dry then I focus mostly on my roots. Not only am I being green, I'm doing my hair a favor. When you hair is wet it is in it's most vulnerable stage, so by allowing it to dry some you are less likely to have as much damage.

Lots of times when women decide to go natural and grow out their relaxers they decide to do a "big chop." A big chop is when you cut all the remaining relaxed hair off, so you are an instant natural. There are several reasons why people do the big chop, mainly because keeping up with the two textures is enough to drive you up the wall. Then if that wasn't enough a lot of people have issues with the line of demarcation, for example that area is weak or the hair gets easily tangle there resulting in breakage. I know if I stretch my relaxer for a certain amount of weeks I notice a definite difference and I can feel the line of demarcation even when my hair has been blow dried and flat ironed. So what do you do? The best thing is to baby the area and don't fight with your natural texture. It is much easier (& healthier) to allow your hair to dry naturally and wear two strand twists and braid-outs. Other than that, moisturize and condition your hair well during your transition phase or relaxer stretch to protect the line of demarcation.
