An African Adventure

Dublin to Cape Town by the west coast route.

I'm not dead yet: Just gone homeApril 3 2008
As the page title suggests my tour is finally over, and after almost a week of buses, trains , planes, ferries and 4 capital cities I'm back home in Dublin. I've spent most of the last 24 hours sleeping and this QWERTY keyboard is annoying me so much that I might just go back to bed for another 24.
I experienced rain yesterday, for the first time in three months, and it was actually very enjoyable. It gets old very fast though, and now I wish it would stop.
I'll finish up the journal over the next f...

Day 103: Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.March 21 2008
I'm in Sevaré for the moment, partly to catch up on the journal and respond to three weeks worth of e-mails but mainly to give myself time to think about the next step. Sevaré sits at the junction between Mopti, Timbuktu, Bamako and the roads to Niger and Burkina Faso, so I have to choose between south towards greener lands or north into the desert again before I leave here. The choice should be an easy one but Timbuktu is calling to me, a sirens song that's hard to resist.

Day 98: Parting of waysMarch 17 2008
We had a very slow start, said our goodbyes before hitting the road. Our paths are going to cross several times more on the way south so hopefully we'll be meeting up again on the road. Great to be back on the road for real, legs are feeling great and the roads are perfect. Temperature hit 47° in the afternoon, and the hot season is only begining. Stopped for half the day and cycled half the night which worked quite well.

Day 97: On the road againMarch 17 2008
Finally back on the road, myself and Luis are going the same way for the first 80k so we took an easy day and didn't go too far. Got a place to stay in a church in Bla, price was zero which fitted my budget quite neatly.

Day 96: Got my visaMarch 14 2008
Got the visa extension no problem, the cop I was dealing with was the friendliest official I've met so far. I got the feeling that I could have turned up a month late and still had no hassles. It took 15 minutes all told and most of that was just making conversation. Now its another 7-8 hour bus ride in 40° heat to get back to camp. Woo-hoo!
