Creating -and using- eyeOS

Welcome to eyeOS 1.8!January 6

We are proud to announce the inmediate availability of the first eyeOS version of 2009: eyeOS 1.8.0. It’s now available to download (for installing or upgrading an eyeOS server, see the Requirements) and use from the public server. This new version includes new aplications, major improvements in both system and base applications and bug fixes all around the platform, and represents an increase of the active developers community at eyeOS with significant contributions of Matthew Powell, Daniel Sousa, Lars Knickrehm and more new members.

The new eyeFiles
One of the most important applications in eyeOS, eyeFiles (the file manager) didn’t have major updates since it was initially released in eyeOS 1.0. It has been rewritten for eyeOS 1.8 and includes major new features such as a multiple views (icons, list, details), a new zone to navigate between home folder, groups and trash (unifying the three apps into a single one), a new “Open With…” dialog to select which app should open a specific type of file and more.

Welcome 2009!January 1

Yesterday we looked back on the last year. Today it is 2009 - really! We wish everybody a Happy New Year!

The eyeOS Team decided some New Year’s pledges and we want to start fulfilling one of them right now:

  • Originally eyeOS 1.8 should be finally released today. But our eyeOS timeline is not fixed: The eyeOS Team aims to release a stable eyeOS version for all users and unless we cannot do it because of any known issue, we will not. eyeOS users get the highest quality as possible!

eyeOS 1.8 Preview 2

Because of some known issues we delayed the final release of eyeOS 1.8 a week. This preview fixes many problems, which were reported by our community. Some of them are:

  • The desktop is working with Firefox 2.
  • The Tree widget is working with Opera and Safari.
  • Problems with translations are fixed.
  • Problems with wallpapers are fixed.
  • No need to empty the browser’s cache to change the theme.
  • Many more fixes…

Please commit all new bugs you notice in this second preview at Launchpad. You can find more information about this release in its Release Notes.

eyeOS 1.8 Preview 1 ReleasedDecember 24 2008

We are proud to announce the first preview of eyeOS 1.8, which includes some new great freatures, bug fixes and is another step to get eyeOS closer to the end user, making it feeling more comfortable with eyeOS. As usual, the preview is released to find and solve the maximum number of bugs possible. This is why we would like to ask everyone to test the new release online or downloading it before the final release and report all the bugs seen to the eyeOS bugs page at launchpad. You can read here instructions about how to report bugs in eyeOS.

Happy Christmas from the eyeOS crowdDecember 24 2008

2008 has been probably the most interesting year for the eyeOS Project in a wide variety of aspects. One year ago, at December 2007 the eyeOS company was funded to promote and offer services around eyeOS. We’re glad to announce that the company will be profitable this first year and we’ll continue spreading eyeOS all around the world on 2009 thanks to it.

The eyeOS Community has grown a lot, having new members with small contributions to the code and key members that have continued or get involved in the project during 2008. Matthew Powell decided that the eyeOS wiki was not good enough. And after more than 1000 changes, he’s still not happy with it ;-). Lars Knickrehm gave name to eyeOS 1.7 and 1.8 thanks to all his efforts to work on 1.x before 2.0. Anaël Ollier worked some months on the main eyeOS office and is still developing key parts for the future eyeOS 2.0. Daniel Sousa didn’t stop his continued help at the eyeOS Forums but also developed some new parts of eyeOS to be included in 1.8.

But the list doesn’t end here. Adam Kasperski, Ahmed al-Ghamdi, Aleksey Tsutsei, Alexandre Mejat, Andrea Vindigni, Aron Xu, Benito Rodríguez, Blagovest Lefterov, Chris Judson, David Comuñas, Dempsey van Wissen, Edouard Daubin, Eduar Garza, Enrico Sambo, Eugenio Baldi, Felipe Tavares, Fernando González, François Bocquet, George Westenbrink, Hasan Degismez, Hendryk B.
