By Kelly Bean:
I have been shaped as a leader in my roles of pastor/cultivator to Third Saturday, the ever evolving faith community I have led for nearly 21 years and, as co-coordinator of Convergence—women who lead others in following the way of Jesus.
A few years back I gobbled up An Introduction to Ecclesiology: Ecumenical, Historical & Global Perspectives, a book by Veli-Matti Karkkainen, chock full of tasty samples of practical theology. Karkkainen’s book includes references to the work of the now late pastor and theologian Letty Russell. I was delighted to discover her theology of “church in the round” or “church ‘round the table”. A gathering around a kitchen table served as Russell’s metaphor for a way of being church. This theology of hospitality and welcome confirmed what I already valued and what I practiced as a faith community leader.
Church round the table makes space for all of us. It is a “spirituality of connection” which does not admit divisions between the ordinary and the hol

By Maurice Broaddus, re-posted from The Pontifications of the Sinister Minister:
The Dwelling Place has always defined itself as a missional faith community. Granted, we’ve been labeled an emergent church which I don’t care about because people love their categories and will use them to embrace and vilify you. Defending the emergent church or being missional is not part of my mission. In fact, arguing over the emergent church, its theology, etc. sounds like arguments that few but the inside care about. (I get that arguments like these and things like the “ontological Christ” are important in some circles—and I know it’s hard to get our missiology correct if our theology is suspect—but in the final analysis, the bulk of my conversations are not with inside folks.)
Generally, I’ve seen three models of what folks call emergent church. So most of the time we’re trapped between the traditional crowd believing us to

By Tiffany Montavon:
On the Everything Must Change Tour, I was lucky enough to be photographer for the final worship ritual of the event. After praying and offering their action to God at the altar, people held up their hands for me to photograph, where they had written their commitment to help solve one of the world’s crises. It was such sacred ground, to witness each individual commitment to one action, each person “opting in” to create the kingdom of God—the dream of God—here on earth.
These photos are now the screensaver on my computer, so I regularly see them flash by: “Teach reading to immigrants.” “Pick up trash weekly.” “Join environmental policy organization.” So much is needed in the kingdom! I’m inspired to do my own small step, as I look at these hands of Christ in the world.
What will I do this year? How can I use my hands to further God’s kingdom?
One place to explore this question after Christmas is at this event:
The Call to Living Justly: Becoming Part of the Change
In this half-day experiential workshop we will explore …
- What a just world looks like in God’s dream.
- What is drawing you to live more compassionately?
- What past experiences, gifts, and passions of yours may guide your focus for justice work?
