- Crowdsourcing the logo for AltimeterNovember 20
-
I've had good success setting up my own business at Altimeter Group but one thing I never got around to doing was getting a logo done. Last summer, I was briefed crowdSPRING, which is a marketplace for creative projects. So I've decided to put my logo up as a project there, where designers can submit their ideas.
Why put my brand logo design in the hands of complete strangers? Well, I figured that anything is better than the simple font-based brand identity I have now! I also looked at some of the existing projects that are on the site, like the logo design for Zodiac Tea -- which has 360 submissions as of this post. Not only are the designs excellent, but there's an excellent dialog taking place on the projects, not only between the project owner and individual designers, but also between the designers themselves. This is truly a collaborate effort to design the best logo for the company.
And as a believer in social media, I wanted to see what happens. crowdSPRING built in feedback from the community, so I'm looking forward to having you, my community, give feedback on the submitted designs.
So please come and view the submissions to my project, encourage your designer friends to give it a go, and by all means, give me your feedback on which logo you think best suits me and my n
- Groundswell named #8 on Amazon's Best Business Books listNovember 11
-
I was excited to see that Groundswell was selected named to Amazon's Top Ten Best Business Books of 2008. It joins some excellent company, from Warren Buffet to John Kotter. Between the book tour, striking out on my own, and well, life, I haven't kept up on my own reading much this past year. So in looking at the list, I immediately added a few titles to my Amazon/Audible carts, namely The Back Of The Napkin and The Illusions of Entrepreneurship. And it was nice to see Guy Ka
- Election day thoughts on race and genderNovember 4
-
On the date of this historic election, I am reminded in a very personal way how far we have come as a country and as a society. Recently, I was copying my Michigan birth certificate (more on why below) when I noticed some of the boxes on the form.
I was born in 1966 and my parents had to fill out the field "Color or Race". And while my father had an "Occupation" box to fill out, my mother didn't have that.
This is a stark reminder that we are barely a generation into being a "post-racial" and equal rights society. It's sometimes hard for me to remember this as I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is a racial melting pot with half of the population being non-white. Being a highly transient region also means that we are much more open to new people coming from different communities and cultures.
Given this context, it's amazing that we are on the verge of electing either a non-white president, a woman vice-president, and had a strong showing from a woman presidential candidate. But is the rest of the country really that ready to accept a non-white or woman president? I would hope so, but given the proximity of our pre- post-racial, post-gender past, I'm pessimistic.
First, I work in the technology space, and the scarcity of women speakers and attendees in meetings and in conferences is a constant reminder that we have a long way to go. There is the usual uproar that
- Facebook viruses: How to fight backOctober 24
-
I got hit with a Facebook malware virus recently and I've actually been pretty lucky -- it could have been a lot, lot worse. I wrote about how some Facebook viruses manifest themselves back in August - in that case, hundreds of emails were sent out through an unsuspecting person's account with a virus-laden link. In my case, the same thing happened this past week -- I received an email from a trusted friend and I did not have my internal "sucker alert" turned on. I clicked on the link, downloaded something, and proceeded to have my system run amok. My anti-virus and anti-malware software kicked in and caught part of the nasty "finditand" redirect bug, but not all of it. Fortunately, it didn't spawn malicious messages to my Facebook friends and I was able to remove it (details on how to do this are in this forum posting).
The friend who sent me the message was not so lucky. He was distracted -- multitasking, talking on the phone -- when he c
- Social Media Marketing Forum keynote slides now availableOctober 1
-
This morning I gave the kickoff keynote at the Social Media Marketing Summit, speaking on the subject, "Social Media For Business".
The audience was squarely focused on marketing, so I grounded the speech on the need to develop relationships with your audience. All too often, marketing is campaign focused and driven, leaving customers with a dry (sometimes bad) taste in their mouths. Marketing in general, not just social media marketing, needs to be focused on growing a long term relationship centered on trust.
The slides have some new research that I'll be writing about over the next few days, but especially for the attendees, I wanted to make the link to them ASAP.
