Predictions for 2009December 15 2008

As Peter Kim writes, "Community and collaboration are a wonderful thing." Pete took the initiative to wrangle 14 social media bloggers to give our predictions for 2009. He's summarized some of the top predictions in a blog post, and also published all of the predictions in a PDF that's available as a free download, on Scribd, or embedded below.

I've republished my social media predictions below, as well as a few new ones that I've thought about since my submission to Peter.

- Obama-maniacs will spawn a new age of activism. The millions of online-activated volunteers in the Obama campaign will find the drudgery of governing unappealing and abandon Obama's citizen government movement. Looking for new challenges, they will champion causes ranging from gay marriage to local school improvements. Non-profits will recognize the potential of bringing on these virtual community organizers, especially their ability to raise money in tiny increments in a down economy. So despite a raging recession, charitable giving will new numerous new -- albeit smaller -- sources of contributions

- Exclusivity trumps accessibility. Having thousands of friends becomes "so 2008" and d

Crowdsourcing the logo for AltimeterNovember 20 2008

I've had good success setting up my own business at Altimeter Group but one thing I never got around to doing was getting a logo done. Last summer, I was briefed crowdSPRING, which is a marketplace for creative projects. So I've decided to put my logo up as a project there, where designers can submit their ideas.

Why put my brand logo design in the hands of complete strangers? Well, I figured that anything is better than the simple font-based brand identity I have now! I also looked at some of the existing projects that are on the site, like the logo design for Zodiac Tea -- which has 360 submissions as of this post. Not only are the designs excellent, but there's an excellent dialog taking place on the projects, not only between the project owner and individual designers, but also between the designers themselves. This is truly a collaborate effort to design the best logo for the company.

And as a believer in social media, I wanted to see what happens. crowdSPRING built in feedback from the community, so I'm looking forward to having you, my community, give feedback on the submitted designs.

So please come and view the submissions to my project, encourage your designer friends to give it a go, and by all means, give me your feedback on which logo you think best suits me and my n

Facebook viruses: How to fight backOctober 25 2008

anitvirus I got hit with a Facebook malware virus recently and I've actually been pretty lucky -- it could have been a lot, lot worse. I wrote about how some Facebook viruses manifest themselves back in August - in that case, hundreds of emails were sent out through an unsuspecting person's account with a virus-laden link.

In my case, the same thing happened this past week -- I received an email from a trusted friend and I did not have my internal "sucker alert" turned on. I clicked on the link, downloaded something, and proceeded to have my system run amok. My anti-virus and anti-malware software kicked in and caught part of the nasty "finditand" redirect bug, but not all of it. Fortunately, it didn't spawn malicious messages to my Facebook friends and I was able to remove it (details on how to do this are in this forum posting).

The friend who sent me the message was not so lucky. He was distracted -- multitasking, talking on the phone -- when he clicke

Social Media Marketing Forum keynote slides now availableOctober 2 2008

This morning I gave the kickoff keynote at the Social Media Marketing Summit, speaking on the subject, "Social Media For Business".

The audience was squarely focused on marketing, so I grounded the speech on the need to develop relationships with your audience. All too often, marketing is campaign focused and driven, leaving customers with a dry (sometimes bad) taste in their mouths. Marketing in general, not just social media marketing, needs to be focused on growing a long term relationship centered on trust.

The slides have some new research that I'll be writing about over the next few days, but especially for the attendees, I wanted to make the link to them ASAP.

Announcing Altimeter GroupSeptember 25 2008

I'm very happy and proud to announce my new company, Altimeter Group. The goal of the company is to provide thought leadership on social and emerging technologies, And thanks to the support and well-wishes of many people, I'm off and running. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions I'm getting about Altimeter Group.

What services will you be providing?

My goal is to help leaders and their companies understand how to deal with and thrive with social and emerging technologies. This space is often murky, confusing, and downright frightening for companies. My goal is to provide clarity and understanding.

The unique way that I add value is understanding these new technologies and how people use them -- I'm an active user of these new technologies and also actively seek out new ways that technologies impact people..

But I've also always kept a foot in the business world, so am able to understand and interpret how companies are and will be impacted by the adoption of these new technologies. In the book Groundswell, Josh Bernoff and I took the confusing world of social technologies and boiled it down so that not only was it understandable, but also approachable and actionable for businesses.

My goal is to continue providing that kind of thought leadership and insight primarily through writing, public speaking, and co
