Wholphin Screening at the Silent Movie Theatre in LAJanuary 6

Join us for Wholphin’s return to the The Cinefamily to celebrate the release of both Wholphin No 7 and the Best of Wholphin Vol 1. The screening will include a documentary about England’s fight to save her beloved red squirrels from invasion by the American grey squirrels, an early short film by Gus Van Sant based on a William S. Burroughs short story, an incredibly close look at the sun in its most gorgeous and inactive state, as well as Academy Award-winning shorts, UFOs, giant squid, and a live, interactive scientific experiment in retroactive causality, in which the audience, just by watching, will help to determine the role of consciousness in the establishment of a physical reality.

Details and advanced tickets here.

Wholphin / Rooftop Screening PicsDecember 10 2008

Heading to the Wholphin screening in NYC on Monday, hosted by the incredibly cool kids at Rooftop Films, my cab passed the Greenwich Village theatre. The Greenwich is a great old movie house, but was sitting dark and empty at the time. Meanwhile, a few blocks away, hundreds of New Yorkers were packing into an empty warehouse in the Chelsea Market, which is basically a fancy mall, to sit on folding chairs and watch a bunch of short films they knew nothing about. Theaters have long maintained that audiences won’t come out for shorts, especially on blistering cold winter nights, and as usual, the industry is utterly wrong. I mentioned the absurdity of it to Rooftop’s Dan Nuxoll. “The free beer helps,” he said, splashing ice water on my revolution. But whatever, if this picture isn’t a sign of an industry in transition I don’t know what is.

“Apart From That” now available! Happy are we!November 27 2008

Friends know we are huge fans of Randy Walker and Jennifer Shainin’s astounding feature film, Apart From That. The special edition DVD/CD soundtrack/photo book with special features, including auditions, a “making of” documentary, trailers, and deleted scenes from Apart From That is ON SALE, at 25% OFF, and you can buy it here.

The film is also available online for digital download (VOD) on Amazon and iTunes.

People are sloppy. They want to be liked by strangers and will go to great lengths to be accepted. In the character-driven narrative feature film, Apart From That, the little moments that define the everyday lives of a student beautician, an elderly exhibitionist, a Native American road worker, a Vietnamese banker and his adopted American son reveal the similarities between very different people.
