Laptop or Desktop? What Do You Run SolidWorks On?Yesterday

obsolete-robotSuddenly and without warning all of our robots have become decrepit, obsolete piles of gears and we now depend on virtual synthanoids that require no pre-programmed set of commands.

Hmmm. Interesting thought for the future. But apply this to that mass sitting on your desk right now. Is it a workstation desktop wired to the hilt or a more portable laptop? Take the quick 1 second poll below and tell us what you use.

I’m also curious. Desktop Computers are grow more obsolete everyday. Are you/your company preparing to move to laptops or looking into Rack technology like the Dell Precision R5400? Hit the comments!

solidworks-3d-sketch-patterStop pouring Teriyaki all over your desk for a few minutes, Mr Ginsu, and take a look at this. You have the power to sizzle up one single pattern on different faces… of different parts… in an assembly. The shock and horror is overwhelming, yet your deeply drawn to find out how you’re able to do it, yes?

Sometimes you need parts to follow a pattern across different parts in an assembly. but creating patterns separately in the parts can be a pain.

There are work-arounds (mentioned below) but using a simple sketch pattern in an assembly can take away all the heartburn, allowing you to get back to your spring-rolls and won-tons. Here’s how to do it.

Four things about sketch patterns:

  • orientation of patterned components can NOT be changed
  • works best on one planer axis (x,y for example)
  • people get excited when they find out about them
  • they have no feelings

In your poor assembly lacking the joy of finely patterned parts…

Delicious Design Process: How 3D and Rapid-Prototyping Benefit The Embody ChairJanuary 5

embody-herman-miller-chair
After seeing the Herman Miller Embody Chair for the first time, I became a wee bit obsessed with what went into the design. With the design and development ranging over years of the incredible experience of Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf, the process had to be something to talk about.

Turns out it was. I had the chance to ask the design team a few questions about the project, what programs were used and how it affected the design. Guess what, SolidWorks used a little bit, but all together a whopping nine programs were use in the process. Take a look.

What tools/programs (sketching, 3d CAD, simulation, rendering?) were used in the design process of the chair?

Engineering (Herman Miller, Inc.) software:

  • Pro/E Wildfire 2 & 3 with PDM Link
  • Some AutoCAD for 2D layouts and pattern making
  • Some SolidWorks (for manufacturing)
  • Ansys 11 for linear and non-linear analysis
