Famed rock-and-roll guitarist and longtime Ann Arbor resident

Ronald "Ron" Asheton was found dead in his home on the city's west side this morning, police said.

Asheton, 60, was an original member of The Stooges, a garage-rock band headlined by Iggy Pop and formed in Ann Arbor in 1967. His personal assistant contacted police late Monday night after being unable to reach Asheton for days, Detective Bill Stanford said.

Officers went to the home on Highlake Avenue at around midnight and discovered Asheton's body on a living-room couch. He appeared to have been dead for at least several days, Stanford said. [Ann Arbor News]

Levon Helm - 2009 Tour Dates (Beacon Theatre) (presale)January 5

The Black Crowes will record new, original material for an upcoming album during four sold-out concerts at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, in February and March. This run of performances at the recording studio built decades ago by the 2008 Grammy winner and former drummer for the Band are being billed as "Cabin Fever Winter 2009." The shows on February 21, 22, 28 and March 1 sold out in less than two days.

"We're thrilled," Helm, who's not scheduled to perform, tells Rolling Stone. "It kind of shows me that we're doing things right." Scotland's Glasvegas finally releases its self-titled debut album stateside tomorrow after garnering rave reviews in the UK. The album appeared on may "best of 2008" music lists, and seems destined to dominate 2009's lists as well (editor's note: I am personally not in love with the album. Are you?).

My shopping list is pretty short, dominated by the vinyl editions of Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, Hacienda's Loud Is the Night, and Starflyer 59's Dial M.
