- Colbert's 'Operation Humble Kanye' Takes Aim at iTunesToday
-
The Colbert ReportMon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c
Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, who successfully pushed fans to insert erroneous edits into Wikipedia two years ago, is hoping his minions will grant him another online victory via iTunes.
Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, is urging viewers to log on to Apple's iTunes at 5 p.m. EST and collectively purchase his Christmas album in an effort to kick rapper Kanye West out of the top spot.
"Do it for Kanye," Colbert said of the project, dubbed Operation Humble Kanye (OHK). "If his head gets any bigger, it will explode and then we will all be covered w
- comScore: Cyber Monday Sales Up 15 PercentToday
-

Though overall online holiday spending is down 2 percent from last year, sales from Cyber Monday saw a 15 percent jump, making it the second heaviest online spending day on record, according to data from comScore.
Online shopping on the Monday after Thanksgiving brought in $846 million, up from $733 million in 2007.
Shopping during the four-day period between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, meanwhile, saw a 13 percent increase from last year--from $645 million to $769 million.
Prior to Thanksgiving, however, people were not as eager to cyber shop. Online sales during the month of November dropped 2 percent from last year to $12 billion.
Looking to cash-in during rough economic times, some stores kicked off their sales on Thanksgiving Day itself. Shoppers who ditched the turkey for some Web shopping helped increase Thursday totals by 6 percent, comScore reported.
"Consumers are clearly responding positively to retailers' aggressive online discounts," comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement. "With Cyber Monday promotions beginning in earnest over the Thanksgiving weekend, consumers have finally begun to open their wallets, setting off a streak of four consecutive days of extremely strong growth."
In a survey conducted by comScore between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, 51 perce
- Yahoo's Launchcast to be Powered by CBS RadioToday
-
Yahoo! is not having much luck with music. After migrating its Music Unlimited customers to Rhapsody and shutting down support for the Yahoo! Music Store earlier this year, Yahoo! said Wednesday that it will fold its Launchcast Radio player into CBS Radio.
Starting early next year, CBS will combine Launchcast's 150 stations with the 150 stations already on the CBS lineup.
A newly created CBS Radio player will also be integrated into the Yahoo! Music Web site, while CBS Radio players will be added to the Yahoo! News and Sports Web sites.
The deal also expands browser support for the Launchcast player to Firefox and Safari.
"Partnering with Yahoo! ensures advertisers will be able to reach the greatest possible audience as we leverage our local and national sales force, as well as TargetSpot, to create distinctive campaigns and one of a kind integrated opportunities," David Goodman, president of digital marketing and integrated marketing at CBS Radio, said in a statement.
Launchcast debuted as Launch Media in November 1999 and was purchased by Yahoo! in October 2001. The free music service lets users create playlists and select songs based on their musical tastes.
Yahoo! announced in February that its Music Unlimited customers would be migrated to Rhapsody via a "simple click-through process th
- Amazon iPhone App Helps You Spend, Find Wanted ItemsToday
-
Amazon.com has launched a new iPhone app that lets users browse and purchase items from the e-commerce site.
The free app, dubbed Amazon Mobile, also includes feature known as Amazon Remembers, which lets users snap photos of things they might want and store those pictures on the app and the Amazon.com Web site.
"If the item you want to remember is a product, Amazon Remembers will even try to find a product similar to your photo for sale on the Web," according to Amazon. "If we do, we'll send you an e-mail alert and post the result along with the photo."
Beyond Amazon Remembers, the app works much like the actual Web site. Want to know if an item you see in a store is cheaper online? Browse items offered by Amazon and its third-party retailers, and purchase things right from the iPhone. Wish lists, existing shopping carts, order history, and other features are also available through the app.
Amazon Mobile is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch from the Apple App Store.
In September, Amazon announced that it would preload a version of its Amazon MP3 store on the T-Mobile G1 Android phone from Google. Earlier this year, Amazon struck a
- Social1000: Social Networking for the RichToday
-
Boy, it must be rough being rich these days. Between the proposed rolling back of Bush tax cuts and the lashing out against executive bonuses at failing business, it seems like there's no love for the wealthy. Fortunately, from diamond-encrusted iPods to $1,000 iPhone apps, tech companies are always coming up with good ways for the rich to lavish themselves.
And now, thanks to the fine people at Social1000, the rich now have their very own social network. The social network costs $100 a month (fittingly, about the same price as a really expensive gym) and is limited to 1,000 members. Should 995 people actually see fit to join up, Social1000 will auction off the last five slots.
All of the information on the site is viewable only for members, so signing up is a bit of a crapshoot. "What goes on behind these closed doors is secret, and cannot be shared with those outside the network (no adult material is allowed in the site)," reads a statement on Social1000's homepage. The "not adult material" caveat rules out the sot of Eyes Wide Shut situation I was initially picturing.
If you're really gung-ho about the site, a lifetime membership can be had for $10,000. The site adds, "Our Lifetime Membership includes a Welcome Kit, and can also be wrapped to make the perfect holiday
