Laconica 0.6.4 newsDecember 12 2008

The upgrade of Identi.ca to Laconica 0.6.4 seems to have gone pretty well, but I’m going to give it a night to let people check out the new features before tagging the version and making a tarball for download. (The code is in the Laconica darcs repo if anyone wants to get it, but I’d really recommend letting us take the brunt of any immediately-needed fixes.)

News of the upgrade (better info is in the README file, for admins and developers):

  • “private” installs won’t show any data to the outside world; redirect non-logged-in users to login. (Clearly, Identi.ca is not a private site.)
  • Ability to “block” a subscriber, which forces them to unsubscribe,  doesn’t allow them to subscribe again, and doesn’t allow them to send @-replies.
  • Fine-grained control of subscriptions; users can choose not to receive notices from other users over SMS, or IM, or both
  • support for Mozilla microsummaries
  • more efficient support for blacklisting users from the public page
  • instructions on the public page for people who aren’t logged in
  • better registration instructions
  • a check for license compatibility in receiving OMB notices
  • HTML output in RSS 1.0, 2.0, and Atom feeds
  • tuned and more reliable ‘rememberme‘ cookies for username/password and OpenID logins
  •  a utility
Laconica version 0.6.4 release tonight on Identi.caDecember 11 2008

Quick note: we’ll be releasing a new version of Laconica on Identi.ca tonight, December 11 2008, at 11PM EDT. Although it is a minor release, it will include some new user-visible features, such as “blocking” unwanted subscribers, and finer-grained control of subscription output.

Identi.ca will be down for about 15-20 minutes.

Congratulations to Pownce!December 1 2008

I want to take a second to congratulate the Pownce team on their acquisition by Six Apart. 6A is a great company doing really interesting work, and it sounds like it’s going to be a great opportunity for both groups.

One of the downsides is that the Pownce site will be shutting down on Dec. 15. We know there are lots of Pownce users and developers who will regret seeing this site go off the air. We’d like to see what we can do to help out.

  1. For Pownce users, we’d like to add functionality to import your Pownce export data into Identi.ca or another Laconica site. We hope to have this functionality available by the end of the week (we have to figure out the file format first).
  2. For Pownce developers, we’ve had long-standing plans to implement a clone of the awesome Pownce API.

Clearly time is of the essence here, and help from the Open Source community around Laconica will be key. We’re looking for patches, designs, code ideas, and all that. Please leave comments here or join our mailing list to see what we can do!

iPhone clients for Identi.caNovember 27 2008

We’re happy to see a nice application ecosystem steadily growing around Identi.ca, including a number of great Identi.ca clients for the iPhone (which also work with the iPod Touch). A frequently asked question on Identi.ca is, what Identi.ca clients are there for the iPhone? Here’s a rundown of what’s available.

Moconica

Moconica has the distinction of being the very first iPhone client for Identi.ca. It’s a web-based client designed to be used from the iPhone’s web browser. In addition to Identi.ca, Moconica works with other Laconica-based microblogging services, such as The Twit Army, bleeper.de, or your own Laconica instance. You can subscribe to @moconica to follow development.

Royale With Cheese

Another nice web-based solution. Royale With Cheese (RWC) also supports Twitter, allowing you to see all of your Identi.ca and Twitter updates in a single stream. Fun fact: RWC was written in Erlang. Follow the progress of RWC by subscribing to the author, @hydo (Clint Moore), and @rwctest.

LaTwit

LaTwit was the first native iPhone app for Identi.ca, and is oriented toward the Laconica microblogging platform in general, although it
