Madness of Flowers — A write-up, with cover art, from Night Shade Books.
APOD with a panoramic view of moonrise and sunset — Nice photo. Kind of wide.
Language Log on the Atlas of True Names — This is fascinating, and more than a bit sfnal in its way.
Single-Celled Giant Upends Early Evolution — This story is weird on several levels. Also, an example of science’s processes of self-correction which the IDiots and Creationists may well seize on as evidence of the falsity of evolution.
Question of the day: Han Solo or James T. Kirk? Discuss.

- [conventions] Orycon Day 1Today

Arrived yesterday at Orycon in significant disarray due to a nigh overwhelming number of small, stupid mishaps. No programming yesterday, thankfully, but the Sekrit Projekt with jeffsoesbe morphed into a cheese party. After that, a bit of quiet time, then barcon and the RadCon party. Then zzz. Walked this morning for an hour on the waterfront, which was nice. (7 am in the lobby tomorrow if anyone wants to join me for a repeat.) the_child will be here most of the day.
A few others commenting on Orycon:
bjcooper with her big news! Congratulations!

A travel day about which the less said, the better. As jeffsoesbe commented, “You’re being struck by darts. Lots of little darts.” Let’s just say that the iPhone is really not my friend. (Who the hell builds a device with a soft reset switch and no hardware bypass? When the reset switch is hung, you’re screwed.)
I’m at Orycon, chilling in my room for a while before heading out into the great mass of Con. See some, all or none of you here.

15 degrees out there. I’m telling you, there’s a reason I’ve never wanted to move to Omaha.
Boarding soon for the first leg of the trip home. When I land, tillyjane is picking me up, along with jeffsoesbe. We’re going to swing by Nuevo Rancho Lake for a quick luggage swap, run a Sekrit Projekt errand, then hit Orycon by 2:30 or 3:00 (hopefully).
In other words, it will all be a blur. Expect continued light blogging, with intermittent wit and erudition.
At least it won’t be 15 degrees at Orycon.
