Last week I interviewed the Michael Chin of KickApps. We discussed how his company powers indie gaming communities and how social media platforms will fare during the recession.
Adding a social media component to websites is gaining traction. John McCain did it with McCain Space. The CW did it for GossipGirl. And the indie gaming site, SonyPspInfo, built community features into their site too. They all happen to use KickApps to build social media into their web properties.
KickApps recently released a game widget. Features include an updated version of the classic arcade game, Breakout and a news feed that can be powered by RSS feed or community recommendations. I had a chat with Michael Chin of Kickapps to learn more about his company and the new widget.

Lively will be taken offline at the end of December (5 months after it’s release). Google will be eating it as a lost bet.
Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it’s the
best way to create ground-breaking products that make a difference to people’s lives. But we’ve also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off.
It has been a tough decision, but we want to ensure that we prioritise our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business. Lively.com will be discontinued at the end of December, and everyone who has worked on the project will then move on to other teams.
For the past few months Google has made bold moves into gaming by acquiring in-game ad firm, Adscape for $23 million. and releasing Lively. Google had big plans for Lively, hoping to turn it into an online gaming platform with an API for developers to create their own games.

Today, I came across this video from Alice of Wonderland. It’s probably a marketing stunt but I honestly don’t care. It’s clocked over 300,000 views on Youtube after being posted for less than 24 hours. My fellow tech bloggers and youtubers don’t seem to care if it’s fake either.
