7 Things You May Or May Not Know About MeDecember 22 2008

So last week, my friend Jennifer “tagged” me in a post called 7 Things You May or May Not Know About Me.  She was “tagged” by Aaron Strout (a fellow Georgetown Hoya) who was tagged by, ugh…never mind.  The idea is that you write a post about…well, you can probably guess…then you “tag” seven other people who are supposed to write the same post.  It’s the blogger equivalent of a chain letter.  Although I was never threatened with eternal damnation or my puppy dying if I didn’t pass it along.

Normally, I’m not much for memes.  I delete the emails that say pass it to all your friends.  I don’t accept the Facebook apps that want to tell me how much my friend thinks I’m worth (although I have to admit to being curious to find out).  I generally ignore Tad’s Memes on FriendFeed.  But I’ve been busy and it’s been a week since I posted anything here and, frankly, I had no other ideas.

So, without further adieu, here are seven things you may or may not know about me…

  1. I started my first business in second grade.  Mr. Klass (cool name for a teacher) gave out points for good behavior that you could trade
The Purple People CollectiveDecember 15 2008

I’m proud to announce the launch of the Purple People Collective.

Seems like everywhere you turn, people are getting laid off.  That puts a lot of talent out on the market at a pretty crappy time to be out of work.  Having gone through it myself back in February, I had wished that there was somewhere to reconnect with my colleagues and band together to help find freelance work.  Well, following the Yahoo layoffs last week, my business partner, Jonathan, and I decided to do something about it.

Today, we launched the Purple People Collective.  The PPC is for recently laid off Yahoos (or anyone else) to put up a profile announcing that they’re available for short term freelance gigs.  If you’ve got a gig that you’re looking to hire for, hopefully you can find someone here.  The Yahoos I worked with were some of the most talented, creative, and hardworking people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

It’s our first day up, so we’re aware that there may be some bugs.  Please tell us about them using the Get Help link at the bottom of the page (it goes to Get Satisfaction).  It’s free to post a profile or a gig so hopefully there’s no reason not to sign up.  We’re just trying to help people who want gigs and people who have gigs to meet up.  Hopefully it can

Local Is About People, Not PlacesNovember 25 2008

I love Matt McGee’s blog.  He’s got a pulse on local blogging and search as well as anyone in the industry.  I just stumbled upon this post he wrote about a month ago (don’t know how I missed it the first time) about the intersection of local and social.  In it, he recommends a few social sites for connecting with other local people.

But there’s one thing really missing from his list.  The LOCAL!  Yes, many of these sites have features to help you find things near you through geotagging and whatever, but what none of them do is focus on the local communities themselves.  You can hack your way through Flickr to find pictures of people near you and add them to your contacts, but none of these sites really connect people on a local level.

He does mention outside.in and Placeblogger which are two great local sites.  But as he points out, these sites are most useful for finding other local bloggers–connecting is left up to you.  And as much as we all like to think that blogging has gone mainstream, it really hasn’t.  Think of how many people you know who blog.  Now think of how many people you know who don’t.  See?

The point in all this is that while the web is becoming more and more social, it does a horrible job of putting me in touch
