- The Wolf Files: Run With The Pack On January 12th!Today
-
This past August, the Dog Files crew had the pleasure of traveling to the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY. Once there, we spent the day learning about the Wolves from Maggie Howell and Rebecca Bose, two of the great people working daily at the center to ensure the longtime survival of this incredible animal.
Some of the wolves we met were Apache, an Arctic Wolf (white wolf pictured below,) and Lukas, a Canadian/Rocky Mountain Wolf (grey wolf also pictured below.)

In addition to learning about the wolf, one of the reasons we went to South Salem was to learn about its connection to our beloved dogs. We found out that Wolves can whimper like dogs, but only bark in cases of sensing danger. Also, that the Alpha Wolf lifts its leg when peeing and they all seem to kick up dirt with their hind legs after said event. One of the more annoying traits my two dogs have!

In all, we had an incredible time spending the day with one of nature’s most incredible creations. And when we got home to our own pups, we all had a renewed sense of wonder about them.

There are always good & bad things that come from Hollywood dog movies. The good? A better appreciation and understanding of why dogs are so awesome. The bad? People running out to puppy mills stores to get a dog without thinking it through and the onslaught of Chihuahuas or Dalmations at the shelters a few months later. So after the huge success of the movie Marley & Me, I thought it was important to discuss the ramifications it would have on the public. And then I came across this great article at the Kentucky Humane Society website written by Ursa Marr, that cut through the fog and laid out it arguments clearly. I’m very honored that they are letting me repost the article here.
So please read it and tell us what your thoughts are on the matter. I think it’s very important that these discussions take place, before and after, every dog movie. Because believe me, after the success of Beverly Hill’s Chihuahua and Marley & Me, there will be a huge amount of dog movies coming out in the next few years. That’s just how Hollywood works.
Marley & You
I haven’t seen the Marley & Me movie yet, but as a dog owner and trainer, I’m pretty sure there’s a law that

Last week I was asked to be on a live web video show about start up companies. The site is called Lucky Startups and I jumped at the chance. The hosts, Aronado and Dennis were great and we got to talk all about The Dog Files, my views on Shelter Dogs and a whole lot more.
I was also able to have The Dog Files mascot, Max on the show with me and Remy, my other hound, made a little cameo at the end.
So check it out! I think you’ll find it fun and interesting and please feel free to leave any comments you have about it, right here. And I promise, the next time I’m in front of the camera, I’ll smile a bit more!
Thanks,

Man shoots attacking dog at Rocky River Metropark
Posted by Donna J. Miller/Plain Dealer Reporter December 30, 2008 20:09PMA Metroparks visitor carrying a concealed gun fatally shot a rottweiler that attacked his leashed dog at Tyler Field off Valley Parkway.
Rangers spokeswoman Dianna Kall said this is what happened about 3:30 p.m. Saturday:
The armed man was walking his Labrador on a leash when the leashed rottweiler broke free from its owner and attacked. The two dog owners tried to separate the dogs. When pulling and kicking failed, the Labrador owner shot the rottweiler dead.
Rangers collected statements from the two men and five witnesses. They said the man with the guy was carrying it legally. Concealed carry is allowed in the Metroparks. Park Prosecutor Joe Feighan will decide whether charges will be filed.
The Labrador is recovering from its injuries.
