The substantive issues surrounding an economic stimulus are clearer than the politics of getting it passed fast. Here’s how Obama is trying to weave the politics and the substance together.

Marvel Comics enjoyed quite a moment of free publicity last year when the Barack Obama camp released a list of previously little-known factoids about the candidate mentioning that he collected “Spider-Man” comics in his youth, and now the comic company is giving the president-elect a creative show of gratitude.

So CNN floated this rumor the other day that its very own snazzy doctor guy, neurosurgeon and embeddable reporter, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, might be making a “house call” to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. as our nation’s next surgeon general, right? Not if Rep. John Conyers can help it.
AP via Google News:
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., urged Democrats to sign onto a letter to President-elect Barack Obama urging him not to nominate Gupta, who is CNN’s chief medical correspondent.
“It is not in the best interests of the nation to have someone like this who lacks the requisite experience needed to oversee the federal agency that provides crucial health care assistance to some of the poorest and most underserved communities in America,” Conyers wrote in a letter released Thursday.

- No Senate Run for MatthewsYesterday

The U.S. Senate is safe from “Hardball” host Chris Matthews—at least for now. Matthews will stay put on the media-specific side of the political arena instead of making a bid for a Senate seat in his home state of Pennsylvania, as suggested by the recent scuttlebutt about him.
Los Angeles Times:
In a routine production meeting before his daily show, “Hardball,” Matthews informed the staff that he was not going to pursue the seat, said network spokesman Jeremy Gaines. The cable host, who is negotiating a new contract at MSNBC, declined to comment.
For the last several months, Matthews toyed with the notion of taking on Republican Sen. Arlen Specter. He even went so far as to talk to state Democratic power brokers about what it would take to challenge Specter, a five-term senator.
