Help Test WordPress for iPhone Version 1.2November 10

We’ve been hard at work improving the WordPress for iPhone app based on all the great feedback we’ve received from the WordPress community.

Based on this feedback, and along with a few bug fixes and performance enhancements, we are introducing a host of new functionality in the forthcoming 1.2 release, including:

  • Landscape mode with the extra wide keyboard
  • Link creation help
  • Support for editing and creating Pages
  • Comment moderation
  • Asynchronous publishing
  • Photo resizing options

With all this new functionality we are asking for help in testing this new version before we push out the update through the Apple iTunes service.  To help test the app, please run the Apple iPhone Simulator that is bundled with the free SDK and download the latest code tagged “1.2beta1″ which is available at iphone.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.2beta1.  To see the comment moderation and Pages support you’ll need to test with a WordPress 2.7 beta build or a WordPress.com blog.

If you find any reproducible bugs please check if anyone has already filed a ticket, and if not create a new ticket with all the details on our iPhone trac.

100,000 and CountingSeptember 16

102,208 to be exact. That’s the number of people worldwide who have installed the WordPress for iPhone App in the month of August and the last week in July–very impressive! These numbers, supplied by Apple, do not count updates for people who upgraded from 1.0 to 1.1.

Here is a chart with the global breakdown of installs:

On the development front lots of work is going into version 1.2 which will include landscape mode, comment moderation, enhanced image options, and a host of other tweaks. If you are able to run the Apple SDK/simulator and know how to use SVN, we encourage you to test the latest trunk version and send us any feedback you may have.

We hope to have the 1.2 release ready within the next few weeks.

Version 1.1 LiveAugust 4

Version 1.1 is now available in the Apple App store.

This version includes several performance improvements and bug fixes including:

  • Proper handling of multi-byte / accented characters, which fixes the crashes many of you were experiencing.
  • The preview system that no longer creates a temporary empty post, which may have interfered with certain plugins like Twitter Tools.
  • More helpful and descriptive error message, no more PC LOAD LETTER.

If you run into any issues please let us know.

You can also track what is planned for version 1.2 via iphone.trac.wordpress.org.

Version 1.1 and BeyondJuly 24

First of all, thanks for all the feedback people have sent in — we really appreciate it.

Our first priority is to fix all the bugs, and once the app is stable and bug-free start looking at adding new features.  Here are a few notes about the bug fixes, source code, getting involved, roadmap, and when to expect an update.

Bugs

We’ve identified two bugs which are now being fixed:

  1. Certain multi-byte characters (ex: Æ, Ø, Å ) cause the app to crash and make it impossible to add a blog
  2. The way the app creates theme previews is interfering with a plugin which causes a one-time blank post to be published to Twitter and possibly to 3rd party RSS services

Source Code

The source code is now available via SVN.  You can browse at http://iphone.trac.wordpress.org/browser or point your SVN client to the latest trunk http://iphone.svn.wordpress.org/trunk/.  The 1.0 release is what’s in the Apple iTunes store right now, http://iphone.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.0,  and “trunk” will be where you’ll find the latest development build.  If you’ve never heard of SVN, a good place to start is on wikipedia.org.

Getting involved

Lots of you ha
