- Mobile Web Server: new release 1.5 availableNovember 19
-
Written by Jukka Eklund. Cross-posted at S60 Living.
It’s that time of the year again, Mobile Web Server 1.5 beta has been released.
Brings easier access rights management, intelligent network handling, improved RSS feeds for effortless sharing and more.
This stuff might sound familiar, because we have discussed those here in the blog and other media. The access rights management page is a personal win for me, it makes life so much easier. Users are still added in the device UI, that’s an architectural feature we couldn’t change anymore.
The new RSS feed is really something to check out. With that you can share content, contextual information or even your own custom feed if you have one. Because the feed is put together and served via the mymobilesite.net service, it is always available even when your site is down. You will find the feed by logging in at mymobilesite.net, and navigating to Edit account -> Feed settings. There are some defaults set up, but you should tune it to your liking.
For you developer types out there, we have now opened up the possibility to add own custom (Python) applications into the MWS framework. This means that your own application can utilize the security framework and be shown in the MWS menu just like the other apps. Head over to MWS wiki to read the tutorial and to get the example applications. There are also a couple of new REST APIs created for Calendar (checking calendar data and making new requests).
Last but not least, check out our new promo video:

Written by Kristian Luoma, product manager of Nokia Chat
It’s time to make the semi-monthly update for releasing fixed errors we’ve found so far. This package resolves issues related to memory consumption and incoming messages caused trouble during usage of predictive text input.
Inspired by the recent Beta Labs announcement made while back about Nokia Friend View, we wanted to refresh the client by tiny feature update too. We tweaked the send location feature just a bit. Now you should see your friend’s profile picture on map instead of the pin. In case your friend has kept the status up-to-date, making calls works from the maps (may work differently depending on the maps version).
By the way, have you tried out the widely available different service bots that interconnect IM with social communities? I’m referring to the services like from FriendFeed IM, Enjit, Twitt’d, Jaiku, Ping.FM or have you come across any service that runs on IMified that you love? There’s lots of others too I’m sure - would you like to share which ones do you find useful?
As Nokia Chat is XMPP-compliant, it just happens to be that t

Hello everyone,
We’d like to give you a sneak preview of the upcoming version 4.0 of Share Online. With this application you can share your pictures and videos on Ovi directly from your phone. You can also keep track of the latest comments and pictures sent by your friends. Share Online also works with several other image sharing services.
Here are some of the new things that you will notice in Share Online 4.0 beta:
- Improved upload/download experience. You don’t need to wait for your photos to be uploaded before uploading the next one. You can refresh your feeds, add comments, or even exit the application while the uploading is still in progress.
- Outbox. You can see a list of pending uploads, as well as review, cancel or retry specific uploads. You can also use the Outbox to keep track of which photos and videos you have already uploaded.
- Economic sharing. If you don’t have an affordable data plan, you can disable the use of cellular data in the Share Online settings, and queue your photos and videos to be uploaded as soon as a free WLAN connection is available. In addition, there are data counters a

Yesterday, I wrote wrote a post in my Nokia internal blog, wondering aloud about one of the unsolved problems in Nokia and in the web industry. Several people asked me to ask the same question publicly, so here is the original post reproduced - only confidential parts removed:
After we launched Nokia Friend View at Beta Labs yesterday, with a remarkably great initial response from the user community, there was one comment that struck a chord in me:
“wish it would share contacts with Nokia Chat. separate lists is silly”
This so reminds me of the last year’s frustration regarding multiple Nokia accounts, which is now forcibly being solved Nokia Account. The only difference this time is that it’s now about your contacts, instead of yourself.
[clip - confidential discussion about alternative solutions removed - clap]
Still, I wonder what would be the right thing to do… Should we have only one set of contacts whom we can interact with in multiple ways, or should we have multiple sets of contacts for different services / use cases?
I believe the optimal set is somewhere in between. For example, I want to do work-related microblogging with my work conta
