shaping the future together

Merry christmas and happy new Beta Labs beta!December 23 2008

Ho-ho-hoo!

As an early Christmas present, we are proud to give you a sneak peek to the renewed Beta Labs website! This is a splendid opportunity for you to really affect how the service will look and work in the future. The site is currently in early beta, so again, be prepared for some rough edges. But we were just SO eager to get it out there before Christmas! It’s been a long and rocky road, but we’re finally getting there!

We are planning to replace the old site with the new during January and we would really appreciate your feedback. So if you want to have an influence, check out the site and post your thoughts, suggestions, bug reports and reviews on the forum. The new site is linked to Nokia Account, so you can use that to sign in. We know it is far from perfect, but we wanted to give you the privilege to see it as early as possible.

So, hope you like the direction we are taking the service. Please, check out the site and discuss it on the forum -your actions have a direct effect on our work in January. An please do it before Sunday, as we probably will need to close the forum then for a week.

Return of Conversation app - now for all S60 3rd Edition devicesDecember 19 2008

conversation_081219.jpg

Yes. We heard you. After listening your heartbreaking pleas, complaints, wishes, threats, and prayers for a year, we are now proud to present Conversation application, mightier and with wider compatibility than ever.

Conversation is an add-on application that allows you to follow your communication with contacts as streams of conversations, which it organizes, based on individual contacts. The application also makes it very easy to reply to received messages and continue an ongoing conversation with the contact.

Note: due to technical complexities, there are several versions and installation packages. Choose wisely. And if you have earlier versions of Conversation, Gizmo and/or Nokia Chat installed, the installation procedure is a bit tricky. Please be patient and read the instructions first (before reporting incompatibilities). Apologies for the hassle, but otherwise this release wouldn’t have been possible.

Anyway, go ahead, have fun - and keep sharing your thoughts!!

Major update for Nokia Audiobooks (the rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated)December 19 2008

Written by Janne Vainio, Research Leader, Nokia Audiobooks

Hi all,

I am Janne Vainio, one of the Nokia audiobook developers and one who started it mainly for my own pleasure :-). My favourite books are made of paper and leather but I am also big fan of audiobooks, which enable book “reading” in occasions normal books can not be read. I apologized for big delay in updating the software but it is currently developed just as a side project within other activities, so it is not really lack of interest but just lack of time to make so slow updates.

Anyhow, here it comes finally as a small Christmas present, hopefully answering at least some of the good comments we have received. We are still reading ALL OF THEM even not have time to answer for everybody anymore, so please keep feedback coming it is extremely useful especially taking into consideration our limited resources for testing and bug hunting.

One big practical improvement for new users of our audiobook client is the single SIS file we have created. So, now you do not have to know whether you phone is 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 or 99.99 version or whatever. You only have one SIS-file to download. However, it does

Step Counter updated: better power management and wider compatibilityDecember 19 2008

Written by Ole Kirkeby, Step Counter team

Our first update of the Nokia Step Counter, which was originally released on May 9th 2008, offers two significant improvements frequently requested by users on the Beta Labs blog: better power management and support for some new S60 products. Here is a list of the new features.

  • Support for the following S60 products: N95, N95 8GB, N82, N93i, 6210, N79, N85, N96
  • Export of step data in CSV format (in Diary, select Options -> Export To File)
  • Sound notifications (in Settings, General, Sound Notification. Use your own alert sounds by replacing alertsteps.aac and alerttarget.aac in E:/StepCounter/AlertSounds)

Furthermore, you can add text entries to workouts indirectly through the Nokia Wellness Diary which automatically imports summary data from the Step Counter (and Nokia Sports Tracker).

We have been working frantically to get this release out before Christmas but with quite a few phone models to support we have not had as much time as we would have liked for testing, and there are still a couple of outstanding problems we need to look at. Highest on our list is support for the E66 as well as more efficient power management on the N96 which does not give us as great a saving as we had hoped.

On this blog there have been a lot of useful comments and suggestions relat

Introducing Handwriting Calculator - a showcase of Nokia’s new handwriting recognition technologyDecember 19 2008

Video: Handwriting Calculator introduced by Ilkka Peltola

Well, this is something I find really promising: Nokia Handwriting Calculator allows you to calculate handwritten math expressions with a touch-screen Nokia device, and with a Windows PC. As such, the calculator really nice, but the really cool part is, in my opinion, the underlying handwriting recognition technology that enables us to create great new applications in the future.

Please don’t mind the minor stylistic rough edges - consider this as an experimental technical showcase, and let the brilliant development team from Beijing know what you think about it!!
