Almost done with the poop yard project. Spyder has more pics here. The old body is sore just about everywhere. You want an upper body work-out? Masonry is for you. Each blocks weighs about 13 pounds, and you have to shove and adjust each one to get it at the right height and so there are no voids beneath the block. This project comes in at around 300 blocks and 25 bags of sand. There's also some gravel for the course that goes up against the house, which I will lay this morning. After that, I'm going to edge the patio in 1x2 treated lumber to keep the edge blocks locked in.
If it wasn't just a poop yard I would have rented a compacter and excavated for a proper base--and it would not be anywhere near finished. I imagine that I'll have some heaving this winter and some blocks to reset in spring, but that's then. I'm worn the hell out now.
Update: And how could I forget to mention that Dr. Ken, (who is single and now lives in the area, ladies) stopped by and gave a full afternoon to the project. The upper right quarter is his work. Thanks, Dr. Ken! - Side jobs todayDecember 31 2008

As I work in academia, I am off this week (paid, thank the Tao) and did a half-day's worth of side jobs for a co-worker. Slapped in in a new bathroom faucet, put up some knick-knack shelves, cut a smidge off a door and installed a sweep, and cleaned the gutters. Even though my friend-rate is $15/hour, she paid me a cool $100 for 4 hours work. Sa-weet. But that has to go for the electrician from work who is going to help us on some wiring stuff. What comes around goes around...
Tomorrow Spyder is cracking the whip, and not in a fun way. We are going to pave the little dog yard for mud-abatement. Today the Home Depot guy delivered two pallets of pavers and ten bags of sand. My back and knees hurt already...
Will post pics when the project is done. - A BSG ChristmasDecember 29 2008

So we get home from Midnight Mass at about 1:30 Thursday morning, an lo and behold what has Santa-Spyder left on the couch? Why, it's another boardgame! And one I am dying to play:

Yep, it's Battlestar Galactica, and a very fine game it looks to be, too. The designers have gone out of their way to crank up the suspicion and mistrust elements. Too much fun. Any of you KC bloggers out there want to join me for a game?
But that was not all. In the morning, the lovely wife bestowed upon me the DVD of BSG Season 3. So I am in frakking Cylon heaven. As I am on paid holiday from my place of employment (I just love academia!) until January 5, I should be able to squeeze in a little time with Boomer, Starbuck, and the rest. All in prep for the January 16 resumption of the show on Scifi.
Thanks, Spyder! You are good to me. - Yet Another Board GameDecember 22 2008

Some side-job money went to my friends at Pulp Fiction (my local game store: thanks for the 20% Holiday discount, Andy!) for a game I have heard some great things about. It's called Pandemic, and it's a co-operative game, which means that the players either all win together or all lose together. The challenge is for the players to cooperate with differing skills to eradicate several (up to four) nasty epidemics. The publisher is Z-Man Games, and the art and production values are top notch. I am looking forward to giving this a whirl asap. You can see reviews, pics and session reports at Boardgamegeek. - The Bush Economy Hits Home, AgainDecember 14 2008
- My Mom worked as a tech writer for VeriFone until last Friday. So now my Mom and my brother are both out of full time work. If anyone knows of a firm that could use a great tech writer--contractor or remote employee--based in Rochester, NY, give me a shout.
