RFID Robot Terminals for the gadget savvy JapaneseNovember 18
RFID Robot Terminals for the gadget savvy Japanese
Next time you visit Japan you might come across RFID robots on the streets out there. This is an initiative undertaken by NEC which plans a combination of touch sensitive screen and RFID reader terminals for collection of data from e-money phones which are a hit among the Japanese population.

The screen would let you know the amount of money held by your handset so that you can make the desired transaction. It would come up with built in camera and face recognition software which would gauge the age of the customer keeping in mind the concept of customer service.

These RFID Robots could be placed at places thronged by people such as theme parks, fairgrounds or movie theaters. People could not only buy tickets from it but also avail guidance keeping human element aside.

I believe it would get acceptance from the people of Japan who are gadget savvy and benefit from it too but what about loss of jobs which may happen as a result. See full article.

RFID guards your bikes while you attend your class
I never realized bikes were a prized possession until I came to know that in the city of Copenhagen alone more than twenty thousand bikes were stolen in a year. Bike theft problem has become so big that around three RFID projects on tagging bikes have been initiated at university levels so that students can concentrate more on their classes and worry less about their bike getting stolen in their absence.

These RFID Bike programs have been running in University of Portsmouth, Copenhagen City and Oregon State University. RFID tags are embedded on these bikes which would deter thieves from eyeing them. Have a look at the RFID Bike Programs running at all these places. See full article.

Connection Cushion: The RFID Connection between your friendsNovember 12
RFID-Connection-Cushion.jpg
I always thought cushions were used for offering support to your neck but how about creating a connection between two people using it? Now this is what Tim Olden aims to realize with his Connection Cushion project.

Here RFID Reader is used in a cushion which enables people to connect on the spot using physical objects. All you need to do is hold your RFID badge on the cushion so that you can create an instant connection with people of your liking in the PICNIC network but how you will get to know whether the other person is equally interested or not? This can be achieved by inclusion of glowing lights, vibrations or audio sounds which would confirm your friendship from the other end. Seems to be a novel method of connecting with friends but whether it will be able to create an impact on the social networking scene still needs to be studied.
