The Environment We Live InSeptember 4

Something needs to be done about our environment, and for those of you who don’t believe in global warming read below:

Massive Canada Arctic ice shelf breaks away

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A huge 19 square mile (55 square km) ice shelf in Canada’s northern Arctic broke away last month and the remaining shelves have shrunk at a “massive and disturbing” rate, the latest sign of accelerating climate change in the remote region, scientists said on Tuesday.

They said the Markham Ice Shelf, one of just five remaining ice shelves in the Canadian Arctic, split away from Ellesmere Island in early August. They also said two large chunks totaling 47 square miles had broken off the nearby Serson Ice Shelf, reducing it in size by 60 percent.

“The changes … were massive and disturbing,” said Warwick Vincent, director of the Centre for Northern Studies at Laval University in Quebec.

Temperatures in large parts of the Arctic have risen far faster than the global average in recent decades, a development that experts say is linked to global warming.

“These substantial calving events underscore the rapidity of changes taking place in the Arctic,” said Derek Mueller, an Arctic ice shelf specialist at Trent University in Ontario.

“These changes are irreversible under the present climate and indicate that the environmental conditions that have kept these ice shelves in balance for

I’m alive.  I have just been really busy with life.  I haven’t been spending a lot of time on the computer, and I haven’t had anytime to check out much tech / media news either.  I feel a little out of the loop.  I guess that’s what happens when life comes at you fast, and lately, life has been coming at me very fast.

I’ll try to update soon, but in the meantime, check out Veer for all your amazing wallpaper needs (thanks to Lindsay Rees for the link).

Delta’s Price of 2nd Bag Now $50July 30

This really aggravates me. How are they even allowed to charge these astronomical fees? It’s highway robbery and something needs to be done about it. I know gas prices are high, but if I go anywhere for vacation on the East Coast, say to Florida, North Carolina, or South Carolina, I’m driving. How are we supposed to go on vacation and enjoy ourselves? I don’t know about you guys, but I go shopping a lot when on vacation, and I’m not paying an arm and a leg to bring stuff back home with me.

My first thought when I read this article was the area I live in.  I live near I-95; it is the road I travel most, and it is one of the most dangerous highways in the U.S., I believe it comes in at #2 behind the freeways in L.A.

I have contemplated getting a Toyota Prius for my next vehicle.  At this moment, I have a gas guzzling Jeep, and because the gas prices are going up, I drive back and forth to work, and that has been the extent of my travel each week since gas went up to over $4 a gallon (At it’s highest it was $4.49 a gallon for regular, it’s now down to $4.39).

I have never felt safe in small cars.  Having had many small cars before my Jeep, I decided to switch to an SUV becau
