iGerard FTW

My blog about the newest gadgets, technology, and Apple.

I Love TechnologyYesterday

If you’ve been following my tweets, you’ll know that I started my trek to Texas today. This is my first long trek across the country by myself so it’s pretty awesome. It’s also exciting to use a few apps on my iPhone to assist my journey.

To keep myself on track and also log my route/timing, I tweeter at every hour for a “check-in” with Loopt. I actually stopped after the 6th hour because at that point I was concentrating on staying awake and wired. Also, I didn’t have to worry about directions because I could use the GPS on Google Maps. Now, what really came in handy was Yelp! and Urbanspoon. Both apps helped me find the nearest gas stations, fast food stops, and hotels. In fact, I used my iPhone to set my accomodations in Shreveport, Louisiana.

I’m currently in bed at a Hampton Inn finishing up some Chinese food I found on Urbanspoon and typing up this blog entry on WordPress for iPhone. I haven’t had to open my MacBook once.

This still amazes me.

I love technology!

TWLOHA: A Call to ArmsNovember 13

Today is To Write Lover on Her Arms day. If you don’t know what TWLOHA is, head over to twloha.com and check out the story.

Based out of Central Florida, TWLOHA is a non-profit organization geared toward suicide prevention. This one of the few organizations that I donate money to every month. It is a good cause and has a strong movement. What people are asked to so is simply write love on your arm. It doesn’t have to be permanent of ostentacious. You never know who will ask or who you will touch by simply writing love on your arm.

In this simple act we can spread the love and show people that are struggling that they are alive, and we’re with them for the haul.

Love is the movement.

Write love on your arm today! If you have, post your pictures here.

Magic Blogosphere Ball: I NEED YOUR HELPOctober 30

Alright blogosphere, I am asking everyone in the iGerardFTW for your help. I NEED A HALLOWEEN COSTUME! I’ve been thinking all month, browsed countless pages, and looked at thousands of Facebook photos from Halloween parties and have STILL come up empty. I want something incredibly witty, something original. Well, it doesn’t necessarily have to be original but I want to get a few chuckles at the party. I’ve seen a few great ideas based on internet memes and I don’t think I’d be that scared to walk outside the house with a few of those on.

I don’t care if you think your idea is stupid or too silly, I need all the help I can get.

The commenter with the best idea gets some sort of swag, seriously. :)

More Grammar Fail!October 28

Yes, when you use bad grammar, I judge you. I will admit that I’m not perfect and that you will find mistakes in my posts, but I’m not a huge blogger (although I’d love to be) and not in the public eye.

In a video sponsored by Rock The Vote, Mos Def is giving a mock speech of him accepting the presidency. After mentioning reading a book and education, this image is flashed on the screen.

I’ll let you find the error.

Incorrect usage of the your/you’re & there/their/they’re contractions are by far my biggest pet peeve. The text should say “You’re An American.” Your is used for possession, like “Here is your ball.” I don’t know how this got past anyone considering how many people it has to go by before being posted online. From the design team, video creation team, EDITOR, and reviewers, there’s no way this could have popped up - this error especially.

I’ll also go ahead and answer your question - yes, please critique my work as well. :)

iPhone TetheringOctober 21

There are a few solutions out there for tethering your iPhone 3G, but there’s one method that puts smiles on my face.

The software I use for tethering is iPhoneModem by Addition. It really makes the tethering process painless and incredibly easy. I’ve never used Netshare, so those users may differ on simplicity. All you need to do is download the iPhoneModem software for your Mac (Windows users have to manually set up the SOCKS proxy), run iPhoneModem on your jailbroken iPhone 3G/EDGE, and you’re good to go!

The free version runs a nag screen every few kb that halts the current connection until you’ve either enter the registration number or hit continue trial. For casual use the nag screen is bearable but after a while it gets incredibly annoying. The program really is worth the $10 though. Yeah, you can download 3proxy and set everything up manually, but this really saves you much of the hassle.

Please remember that tethering is against your AT&T contract and excessive use can lead to huge fees for data use.

Head on over to the link to check out iPhoneModem!
