Why I Am Thankful: Thanksgiving iPhone StyleNovember 27

Today in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I’d write a different kind of article.  Rather than trying to figure out what’s coming next for the iPhone or how to make it better, I wanted to look at the product the way it is.  Rather than complain about missing features like copy/paste or support for MMS, I want to look at what features this device does have.  All year round we are constantly demanding more, but do we ever stop to really think about how far this technological gem has taken us?  On this Thanksgiving Day, it’s time to recognize why we are thankful for the iPhone.

Thank you for Mobile Computing

My iPhone has completely killed my desire for a notebook.  Of course the Treos and Blackberrys of yesteryear allowed us to surf the web or check our emails, but after using the iPhone for any substantial amount of time I ask you, did they really? It may have worked to get quick and dirty information, but the keyword here is dirty.  Funky formatting, unloadable images and a truly awful experience that made users gasp, “I’ll check this out when I get home.”  Managing email was a nightmare!  Mailboxes were constantly full and led to memory management issues.

Thanks mobile Safari for showing me webpages the way they look on my Mac Pro; thanks for giving me a constant experience wherever I go.  Mail.app, thanks for taking care of the st

iPhone Developer Caught Paying For Positive ReviewsNovember 26

An iPhone developer has apparently been caught paying reviewers to leave positive feedback on iTunes, according to reporters at Wired.com.

Adam Majewski, founder of The Casual Game Network, seems to have posted a listing on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, offering to pay $4 for each 5-star review left on iTunes for his newest iPhone application: SantaLive 3D. Adam also left additional instructions to add “five periods at the end of the review” so that he could later identify the source of the review.

So for this hit, all you have to do is download the application ($1.99) and then leave a 5 star review for the app in iTunes or through the app store. So you are making $2 profit in addition to getting the app. When you leave feedback, please leave five periods at the end of the review so I know it is a mturk worker. Then post your user name that you left the feedback under.

Currently, 8 out of the 38 reviews have “five periods” at the end as instructed by the Mechanical Turk listing, although 34 out of the 38 reviews listed received 5-star reviews.

2nd Gen iPod Touch Is Faster Than Your iPhone 3GNovember 25

Who would have thought that the 2nd generation iPod Touch would have a faster processor than the iPhone 3G? According to Handheld Games Corp and Touch Arcade, that is exactly the case.

The difference was first noticed in the game 3D TouchSports Tennis by Handheld Games CEO, Thomas Fessler, who noticed that the 3D elements of the game had a hard time running on the 1st generation iPod Touch. The developers have since implemented optimizations to make the game run efficiently on all devices.

The difference between the gameplay in the devices may have come from the quiet upgrade of the iPod Touch 2nd Gen to 532MHz. Whereas, the iPhone 3G, the O.G. iPhone, as well as the 1st Generation iPod Touch run at 412MHz.

Developers at Handheld Games, however, don’t believe the increased MHz is the only contributing factor, since the performance difference has also been noticed between models that run at the same speed. As far as 3D rendering is concerned, the iPod Touch 2nd Gen is far superior to the other units. The 3G takes second in speed and performance, whereas the 1st Gen iPod Touch takes a far third.

Ok, so the 2nd generation iPod Touch is a tad faster than the 3G… but honestly, does it really matter? To developers, kin
