Things to Give Thanks For…November 25

Here in the States, Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. It’s a week of family, celebrations and giving thanks for all the good in your life. Here at Mixx, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for, but the main thing by far is our great group of Mixxers who have created such an awesome community.

In return, we like to give our Mixxers stuff to be thankful for.  We crunched real hard this week to finish up a few things before the long weekend (which we’re also thankful for!).

So without further ado, the new stuff:

Show All Voters: The last of our promised Mixxer requests, you will now see a “View all” link underneath the list of voters to enable you to see all the voters on a particular story, video or photo.

Skipping Polls: This is for those times when a poll question just doesn’t have your answer, but you don’t want to be asked it over and over again. Just click the “Skip” link and you can skip that poll, see the results and not be asked it again. In upcoming releases, we’ll start accepting user-suggested polls, get poll comments into the Your Conversations page, and take care of some other Mixxer suggestions.

Submit to Communities: We got a lot of great feedback on the new submit flow last week, and the one thing that still needed improving was the way you submit to your Communities.  Thus, we’ve made another tweak to the process to allow you to submit to Communities and their subcategories.

Who Loves You, Baby?November 19

Just about a month ago, we kicked off our birthday party by asking you to chime in and let us know where you’d like to see Mixx go in our second year. We asked for your Wish List o’ Features and then, as a community, you voted for the three you most wanted to see. In return, we promised that we’d get them up and running by the end of the year. Not surprisingly, you had opinions to express and now we have features to tout!

So without further ado, here’s where we stand:

  1. Moving Notifications from email to Site Mail: Our top vote earner, on-site notifications allow you to get notifications like “You have a new friend!” right on Mixx. Then we’ll give you a little nag—just once a day—so you can check in. We don’t want you to miss out on any notifications. If you are currently getting notifications in email, you’ll need to go to your settings page and tweak the settings just the way you want them.
  2. Improved Friend-ing: The second favorite suggested feature, the upgraded Friend feature makes it easy to see which of your friends are mutual and which only go one way.  Check out your fans (go to www.mixx.com/users/<yourMixxID>/fans) and friend them back!
  3. Show All Mixxers: This is a really cool little feature that will let you see every Mixxer who voted on a story, photo or video. We expect to have it up and running very soon.

Early Gifts from the Jolly Mixx Elves!October 29

We snuck out of the office last weekend and, while we were out shopping we couldn’t help but notice that it’s been Christmas for about three weeks already. Apparently that’s the “October Surprise;” not what most of us thought it might be, but well, there it is. And because the Holidays are here earlier than ever this year, we thought we’d get in on the fun and add a few treats to your Mixx!

Poll Central
Because ‘tis also the season for polling, we’re adding a Poll feature. It’s really simple to use—just a question and up to five answers. Because we love to get your opinions, you’ll see polls at various places around the site.  Poll Central is located under the Popular tab and will show all of the open polls throughout Mixx. Poll Central will get its own commenting section and a few other features in the not-too-distant future.

Kudos for Comments
We’ve upgraded Commenting, so now you can:

  • Participate in longer threads without the headache of too much scrolling.
  • Get to the hot conversations faster—you’ll find the most active comment threads highlighted right there on the Popular page.
  • See which Mixxer had the single comment with the most Kudos over the past 24 hours—that’s right! We’ve added a Top Commenter badge to the Mixx. You can find it in the MixxLounge along with all of our other high achieving Mixxers.

Hi Everyone,

Remember how, a couple of weeks ago,  we told you how much we had grown in one short year? Weeeell… We have great news and slightly less than great news.

First the Great news!
This month alone, we’ve had more than FIVE (yes, 5) MILLION unique visitors to Mixx—that’s 12 times where we were in April! We’re all really excited to see how many people have fallen in love with Mixx. So excited that we can’t get Chris [NAME REDACTED] to stop doing the Macarena around the office. So while we’re desperately trying to ignore him, we’re hard at work getting Mixx ready to handle the load so you can continue to get your Mixx Fixx whenever you need it.

Which brings us to the slightly less-than great news. Because the Mixx cup runneth over with happy Mixxers—and we want to keep you happy!—we need to migrate a lot of hardware this coming week (Oct 27-31). This may lead to a bit of downtime, and it’s entirely possible that we could, um, screw it up, what with all the Macarena-ing and all. Of course we’re doing everything to make this transition as smooth as possible, but we will need your understanding.

What’s in it for you? Why, a better Mixx, of course! C’mon, you know we can’t just move a few things around without tossing in some cool new features for you (more on this later). So, hang in there. Bear with us. And if y


Where Have All The Good Pics Gone?October 24

Hey everyone

Just a quick note to let you know that we’re in the process of fixing up image submit.  We received a number of reports of problems with Image upload over the last 18 hours or so (thanks to those who reported it).

What was happening was that we were migrating a bunch of our servers to new hardware and in doing so, the connection between our image server and the rest of the hosts got lost somewhere on the interwebs.

Image uploads should be fixed now, but we have one last issue with avatar switching that we’re in the process of fixing now.

Sorry about the trouble and thanks for the feedback!
