Burger King Burger ShotsToday

20081201-bkshots-sixpack-openside.jpg

Over the weekend, while I was trying not to work, we at A Hamburger Today received this email from longtime reader and frequent commenter Phauxtoe:

Hey, I got a bone to pick with you guys.

Today (Friday) I stopped at Burger King to get a road coffee (nothing else). I saw an ad the menu for "BURGER SHOTS," with and without cheese.

I guess they have moved into the slider market.

Here is the problem: I read your site everyday or so—why do I have to hear about this on the streets?

Thanks but no thanks,
Phauxtoe

Trying my best to make things right with Phauxtoe, I responded as soon as possible:

------------------------------------------------------------

Phauxtoe,
We do try to remain abreast of what goes on in the burger world, but there's a lot going on in it, and sometimes we miss something—especially at the major chains, as we tend to focus more on mom-and-pop shops.

Personally, I like discovering something that hasn't been on all the blogs. There's something to be said for the non-predigested joy of discovery.

I'm sorry that we've let you down.

One thing's sure, though. I know where I'll be exploring for lunch on Monday.

Good Cheeseburger at Saint Dane Bar and Grille in HoustonToday

20081201-saintdane.jpgHouston Press food critic Robb Walsh praises the cheeseburger at Saint Dane Bar & Grille for being moist and juicy and only setting you back $6 with a choice of any side. Another potential plus: the bar is dog-friendly.

Dear AHT: The Stumble Inn in New York CityToday

Clicking in to the AHT inbox recently, we've got this bit of juicy intel. Eat up!

Dear AHT, Letters From Our ReadersIn case you don't already know, there is a Juicy Lucy-style burger living right here in NYC. I ate at The Stumble Inn the other night and on their menu are stuffed burgers. Mine came with American cheese and bacon inside the patty. It was good, not great, but the cheese and bacon oozed out all over the place. If you're ever craving that style burger here, I'd check it out. It's certainly not a travel-worthy burger (especially considering it is right near J.G. Melon's). I haven't seen it offered anywhere else in Manhattan.

The Juicy Lucy is an American cheese-stuffed burger that originates from Minneapolis. The Stumble Inn lets you customize your stuffed burger with American, cheddar, bleu cheese, Swiss, bacon, jalapenos, sautéed mushrooms, or sautéed onio

Snapshots from the UK: Oxford Organic Burger CompanyToday

20081120-oxfordburger-interior.jpgWhile abroad, especially for a long time, sometimes we crave a little taste of home. For many Americans—among whom I guiltily include myself—this nostalgic morsel is found at McDonald's, where American pie tastes more like a cheeseburger meal with fries and a soda.

For those of us who crave some comfort while still seeking to partake in the English culinary gastropub tradition, there's the recently opened Oxford Organic Burger Company. In colonial literature, Britain is often portrayed as the woman, with her masculine colonies bravely providing for her. England and America again find this symbiotic marriage at this Cowley Road burger joint. America provides the inspiration for the flat, California-style patties, and the sides of fries (included with the burger) and green salad. Other American mainstays rarely found in England make their appearances: coleslaw, tuna melt, and banana split. There is also a concerted investment in ambiance, which evokes a sort of picnic-with-the-animals-by-tree-stumps chic—hard to come by outside of London.

'Survivor: Gabon' Competitor Pays $400 For a HamburgerNovember 29

Okay, I realize that this went down a few weeks ago, but I have been traveling and just caught up on some TV shows I had missed. Apparently no one else here at AHT watches Survivor or we would have brought this to you sooner. The auction is one of the more entertaining features of Survivor—competitors are given $500 cash and host Jeff Probst auctions off food and other luxuries. Competitor Matty showed that he was a true hamburger lover when his first and winning bid was $400 for a hamburger deluxe and soda.

How much would you pay for a hamburger if you had been stuck in the jungle for a month?
