Gallery of Firefox Toolbar CustomizationsOctober 7

Well, I put out the request to one and all to see what you have done to customize Firefox, and I got tons of responses.  It is always interesting to see how others are using Firefox to fit their needs - and how creative people get when it comes to moving around the basic toolbars and general interface of the browser.

Here are the best of the bunch!  Thanks to everybody who submitted!

How Have You Customized Firefox?October 3

Give me your Firefox screenshots!

One of the best things about Firefox is that we can customize it to no end, and thus far – no other browser on the market has been able to stack up with that fact.  So I am curious, how have you customized Firefox to fit your needs?  How have you organized your toolbars and icons?

I’ll start things off by showing you my current browser setup:

As you can see I like to keep it pretty simple, and I am rocking the Chromiefox theme right now.  Send me your Firefox screenshots (to mitch@mitchkeeler.com), or post a link here in the comments to them.  If anything else, we might pick up a few customization tips from one another.  I’ll save the best for a round up for a later date and time.

Pros and Cons of Feedly Add-on for FirefoxOctober 2

whatsnew.part1 Is Feedly worth your time?  As a new type of article for Firefox Facts, I thought I would weigh in on both the pros and the cons of this add-on and give you my final thoughts on if it is a keeper or not.  Mind you – I am a very picky man.

If you believe the front page of Feedly.com, even Leo Laporte tweets, “My new favorite Firefox extension (and home page): Feedly.”.  I have heard about Feedly for a while now (from several sources), so I figured it was time I gave it a shot.  You can pick up the add-on for Firefox via the official Feedly web site or the Firefox Add-ons web site as well.

The Install of Feedly

The toolbar icon for it is automatically  placed in your navigation toolbar, so I give it a click and it already has me signed in and has found my Google Reader account.  That is pretty cool.  Under social connections, it is asking me if I want to import Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Twitter or Friend Feed.  I handed it Twitter, then watched it work.  Ok, think this thing is

The Office Theme for FirefoxSeptember 30

Wow, a Firefox theme based on Microsoft Office?  Your first thought might be this theme is about as exciting as a “watching paint dry” extension for the browser.  Thankfully though, I can say it does deliver a pretty nice looking browsing interface.

Extra features: Add one or more of the following pairs of lines to your userChrome.css file to customize your Office theme:

/* change the tab close button to a different and larger close button */ @import url("chrome://global/skin/alt-close-button.css");
/* always use green back/forward buttons */
@import url("chrome://global/skin/alt-nav-buttons.css");

This theme based on Microsoft Office can be picked up on the Firefox Add-ons web site.

Omnibar Comes to FirefoxSeptember 29

omnibar-firefox

Looking at Google Chrome features that could be ported to Firefox with an add-on, one of the most obvious additions many people wanted to see was Google Chrome’s Omnibar.  It mixes both the search box and address bar into one browser feature.

The simply named Omnibar extension gets the job done, and adds a few new features where Google let us down in Chrome.  First, the most obvious feature (as pictured above) it gives you all the features of the search box in your address bar.  The problem, and thing they can not duplicate yet – is showing search results in the Omnibar for Firefox.

Omnibar does support  searching multiple search engines for same query in one go.  All you need to do is use this type of setup:

A general search query is:
@engine1,engine2 your search query

or,if you prefer to give engine name at the end:
your search query@engine1,engine2

Might not be perfect yet, but it does show a lot of promise.  If you have suggestions for it, check out
