Want advice on StumbleUpon?September 20

Update: Your to late! but you can see the Stumble Rocks presentation notes.

Blatant plug, but on the 19th of September I will be in Leeds at the second northern Bloggers Meetup. Where I will be doing a short presentation and no doubt answering questions on one of my favourite subjects of StumbleUpon. Given how much this topic has been talked about in the past I will use my usual numbers and stats routine to dispel some of the myths such as "you can't sell on Stumbleupon" and show you just how long you have to impress the average stumbler.

I won't be speaking at any conferences this year the only one I even pondered talking at was a4uexpo which Al from Self Made Minds will be speaking at and Patrick from Blog Storm is planning to attend but since the rude souls didn't even have the courtesy of emailing me a reply it's their loss I'm not that offended ;)

Anyway the good news is the North of England Bloggers Meetup is free (you can

So my presentation might not have been earth shattering but it covers some basics, it might also have come over slightly negative. The goal was really to dissuade the bloggers in the room from treating StumbleUpon as purely a marketing tool but to see it from the normal stumblers point of view it's their fun your playing with. Does this mean great content shouldn't be on Stumble? Of course not indeed by not overly promoting and not chasing Stumbles you may find your average number of visits increase.

Warning I used a custom font so slideshare has done it's best to convert but hasn't quite managed it ;)

Other Notes

Do not Spam, keeping track of categories and tags is pretty important, people actually spend their lives recategorising misplaced stumbles.

Who wins a Browser War?September 2

The following are literal brain to paper thoughts on Chrome and the logic behind it, they are not official and while I expect for my first thought it will be backed up with stats the second we may have to wait till everything pans out.

Why make a browser

Its a simple if some what open ended question if you are a large search engine why would you invest time and money into a browser. Stand back from one of the cleverest “oops did we leak that?” launches ever and ponder just how Evil is Google?

Google just made millions from people like you!

It might be a drop in the ocean, but the browser development probably didn't cost a great deal to scale from an internal system to a large project except a small team and plenty of man hours but for Google man hours are cheap, However even a drop needs to pay for itself, so how does an open source browser make Google millions overnight?

Well who is going to adopt Google Chrome first? Let's see is it Gran in her home just firing up the big blue E or perhaps the web developer with FF 3 and perhaps more crucially pimped out plugins?

What is one of the single most adopted plugins in the world for Firefox 3? Still don't get it ok spot the difference from fellow northern SEO bloggers DaveN post on Google Chrome!

Flash SEO Indexing Revisited Part 1July 15

Flash SEO
Yes given that Google/Yahoo/Adobe made sweeping announcements I thought it was worth revisiting my Flash SEO tests to see how they are doing and introduce some new tests.

For those that are not sure what this is about, Adobe and Google claim Flash is now "indexable" of course since most SEOs are sheep they spent a lot of time cheering even those who were sceptical still clapped liked penguins. For those of us who have an interest in Flash Google announcement was nothing more then a minor update to farcical heap of dung. But lets ask some very basic questions:

  • Is Flash indexable?
  • Does Flash Rank for terms?
  • Is a Flash Link Followed?
  • Does a Flash Link pass juice?

So back to the original tests....

Back in February I updated a post (Flash the SEO Devil?) from previous April discussing a set 30 tests over 4 domains to see what information the search engines saw from a Flash file.
It looked like...

Grumpy Links the next installmentJuly 15

or I really can't think of a good title!
Well I have been a little on the busy side so time for another absolutely amazing round up of the cool, the fun and just the plain daft SEO and others have to offer.

Wordpress 2.6 guess what your going to upgrade!

Yes its that time when Automatic demonstrate they truly are a useless company and once more have punched another nail into Wordpress already rather stuffed coffin when it comes to enterprise deployment. Don't know what the fuss is about well wordpress.org sums up their entire philosophy in 2 lines.

2.6 is pretty much identical to 2.5 from a plugin and theme compatibility point of view, so upgrades from 2.5 should be pretty painless. The 2.5 branch will no longer be maintain so everyone is encouraged to upgrade. source:http://wordpress.org/development/2008/07/wordpress-26-tyner/

So expect a major security bug some time this afternoon to hit 2.5 to help encourage take up after all the article goes on to say...

1,984,047 downloads of the 2.5 series, the fastest growing release we’ve ever had!

Which was not in anyway influenced by the 3 major security bug scare stories going on at all.

Good Wordpress News!
