Kettle Drum (I Left a Note) by Pale Young Gentlemen
Marvelous Design by Pale Young Gentlemen
Our History by Pale Young GentlemenI know a lot of you like when I suggest music, so I thought I’d do a little write up about Pale Young Gentlemen’s new album, Black Forest (Tra La La). PYG started out as a three person band in Madison, Wisconsin, consisting of Michael and Matt Reisenauer and Brett Randall, but then added Andrew Brawner and Elizabeth Weamer to the mix, filling out the band to it’s current state.
Their newest album Black Forest (Tra La La) just came out in October, and I’m sad that I didn’t hear it when it first came out. The first time listening through, they sound like Andrew Bird. The comparison is easy to make, but after listening to this for the last week straight, they’re much different. PYG has a darker, more romantic sound to them, it kind of reminds me of Fleet Foxes in a way. Honestly my favorite part is Ms. Weamer’s cello parts, which give everyone such a rich and deep sound.
If you like Andrew Bird, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, or any of those kinds of bands, this is definitely for you.

Over in Montreal, Quebec, the kids are becoming the tastemakers. Bancroft Elementary has started an awesome after school program called Modern Music Makers, which basically take students between the ages of 5 and 10, and gives them the means to create music. Their tools are things like drum machines, laptops, microphones, a midi keybaord, as well as cameras and a make shift green screen to make videos with.
I think the results were pretty awesome, as you can see above with Nigel’s awesome song “U.F.O.” I would have absolutely loved to do something like this when I was a kid. I taught in a before and after school program for three years, this would have been something I would have loved to do with the kids. Hopefully this can inspire a few of you to do something just as fun.

Last Saturday I headed down to city hall for a rally to reverse prop 8, something I’m obviously passionate about. The rally went well, there were thousands of people there, and our fight continues on. But as my friends and I were leaving the rally, something odd happened… I ran into Richard Dreyfuss.
At that moment, my head kind of exploded, and it was the most surreal feeling I’ve ever felt. Richard Dreyfuss, a hero of mine, whom I grew up watching in movies like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, was standing in front of me smiling. And like any dumb struck fan does, I said the stupidest thing possible, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!?!”. And like all amazing actors should react, he wittily responded, “C’mon, I know where to pick up all the hot guys…” - I started laughing, thrilled that he was ready to be my best friend.
It turned out he was waiting for his family to pick him up, so he just happened to be there. I asked him if I could take a picture of him with the Reverse Prop 8 sign that I created, and he graciously accepted. Someone mentioned offhand that we wouldn’t leak the photo to the newspapers, and he struck back, “Fuck the papers, you leak it wherever you want.”
So there you go. Richard Dreyfuss, one of my favorite actors since my childhood, supports me
