A Good Husband: Marriage & Relationship Advice

Marriage Advice From A Man

The Best Compliment Letter Ever WrittenYesterday

Yesterday I wrote a post about compliment time as part of a four part series about relationship reviews.  I asked readers what the best compliment they had ever received from their spouse was.  Natasha from Becoming Something left this portion of a letter her husband wrote to her:

Natasha, you make poetry mean something. You put life into music and life into what would otherwise be the mere duty of existence. You make love worth protecting and a family out of a group of children and a motley husband. Natasha, you breathe spirit into soul and feeling into touch. The water from your well shall always satisfy. You are the wonder that all metaphors fail, the gift that can be opened everyday. …There are days when I am forced to pause, when I am struck by the fact that you are my wife. You are a dream I get to touch, a future unfolding before me, a fantastic mysterious and challenging encounter of womanhood as it should be. I love your cheer, your courage and determination. I love your smile and the life that makes that smile an insight into our eternal origins. May the next nine years be better, as growth-filled and as warming.

Lifestyle Design and Marriage: Compliment TimeNovember 18

I don’t think I can say enough good things about complimenting your spouse.  At the end of Companionship.  Inventory each week, my wife and I make sure we tell each other at least 4 - 5 things that we appreciate about each other that week.  We do this without fail, every week, whether we’ve been fighting or not.

In previous posts, we’ve discussed:

It’s a pretty simple concept, but praise and positive reinforcement do a lot for a relationship, especially if one partner is feeling underappreciated.  I should say that no matter what, you must be absolutely sincere.  If you and your wife can’t find anything to compliment each other on, then you need to seek professional help.

Compliment time is my wife’s favorite time of the week.  What is the best compliment that you ever received from your spouse?

Monday Morning Amour - Post Motrin EditionNovember 17

Soooo…if you’re dumb as a brick, and you want to work in marketing, where could you end up working?  How about for Motrin?  I’ve got to say, I didn’t think the ad was that bad, but then, hey, I’m not a mom, so what do I know?

Here’s a piece of marriage advice guys: don’t make fun of mothers.  Funny, it also works as advertising advice.  Perhaps I should be an advertising consultant.  I’m willing. Oh, and sorry to those of you who got 9 posts from me on Twitter - I’m experimenting with a new plug in and it barfed all over my blog.

For those of you who don’t know the Monday Morning Amour drill:

1. Decide what romantic thing you’re going to do for your spouse this week. Could be anything. From as simple as giving a foot rub to planning a romantic date, to planning a romantic vacation, the idea is for you to do something.

2. Let us know what you’re going to plan by leaving a comment below. If you want it to be a surprise, then just give a general idea (I’m planning a date), or, if it will help

Men’s Health: Movember Update 3November 14

How do you turn an American Redneck into an English gentleman?  Apparently you shave the handlebars off of his Mo, comb his hair, and put a bow tie on him.  That’e me, there to the left, and this is me last week, showing my redneck roots.

Movember has been a fun thing for me to participate in.  While other men have probably raised far more money than me, I’ve raised a little bit, and it’s been really good to see.

There are all sorts of health problems out there besides Prostate Cancer.  I’ve had allergic asthma for about 14 years.  This type of asthma is more common among young boys than it is among girls for some reason, but I keep it under control by taking a daily inhaled steroid, and by exercising.

Now, I don’t know how much the average man exercises, but if it’s like me before I got motivated to take care of my asthma, it’s probably about once every 10th or 20th time he feels guilty about his physical shape.  Sound about right?

Turns out that while most men benefit from exercise, it’s actually vitally important for me to exercise, or my lungs stop working p
